Yard Waste Collection Reminder!
The Village of Croton-on-Hudson DPW will be collecting yard waste curbside during the spring, summer and fall months (April through October). All yard waste must be placed in biodegradable leaf bags or open-top garbage cans. Yard waste in plastic bags will not be collected. Yard waste put out with the garbage or mixed in with the garbage will not be collected. No more than ten bags or three opentop garbage cans per pickup.
Yard waste will be collected on Wednesdays:
• On the 1st & 3rd Wednesday of the month, yard waste will be collected from homes North of Route 129.
• On the 2nd & 4th Wednesday of the month, yard waste will be collected from homes South of Route 129
There will be NO YARD WASTE COLLECTION on the following days:
May 29, July 3, October 30. Visit the Village Recyclopedia for more information about what types of yard waste can be put out for collection.

2023 Energy Benchmarking Report Now Available
In August 2018, the Village Board of Trustees adopted an Energy Benchmarking Policy which requires the collecting, reporting, and sharing of building energy data on a regular basis. This allows municipal officials and the public to understand the energy performance of municipal buildings relative to similar buildings nationwide. In 2023, several notable achievements in energy conservation have been observed, including a significant decrease in the amount of electricity and heating oil usage at the Washington Engine Firehouse, which can largely be attributed to the installation of a rooftop solar array and heat pump. New York State's expanded 'Move Over' law is now in effect! The expanded 'Move Over' law requires vehicle operators to safely move over for any vehicle on the shoulder, if possible, or to slow down.

DPW Completes In-House Renovation of Court Room | |

The Department of Public Works (DPW) recently completed a renovation of the Village's court room. The project was undertaken to make the court room ADA compliant and secure the Police Department facilities on the first floor of the Municipal Building. By leveraging existing talent within DPW, the Village avoided the need for outsourcing labor and significantly reduced overhead costs. Special thanks are owed to Mike Esposito, Brian Senno, and Luciano Ponce Ponce for their dedication and expertise in bringing this project to fruition.

Happy spring to everyone! As I write this message, the sun is beginning to poke through the clouds after yet another rain and wind storm. Thankfully, this storm was not as severe as forecast for our area, and the tidal flooding and wind damage was minimal. My thanks to the members of our police department and department of public works who helped to prepare for the storm and addressed any issues that arose during the storm.
The 2024-2025 Tentative Village Budget has been released and can be found online here. Hard copies of the budget are also available to review in the Municipal Building, Room 24, and the Croton Free Library. The Village Treasurer, Daniel Tucker, has put together a comprehensive PowerPoint presentation on the budget and I encourage everyone to review it, if you have not already. The Village Board will be meeting with the department heads this month to review the budget and will ultimately adopt the budget, with any agreed-upon changes, at their board meeting on April 24, 2024.
During the month of March, the Village Board was very busy at their regular meetings. Local Law 6 of 2024 was adopted, which formalizes the regulations for the installation of geothermal energy systems. Please contact the Engineering Department at 914-271-4783 if you plan to install such a system on your property; a building permit will be required. The Village Board also awarded the bid for the Croton Fire Department’s new Tower Ladder 44 to Pierce Manufacturing. The ladder truck is more than 20 years old and beginning to show signs of aging. Maintaining the fire department’s fleet of vehicles protects residents of the village and fire district, and also allows the Village to maintain its low ISO rating, which factors into the cost of property insurance.
The long-awaited replacement of the Grand Street retaining wall is slated to begin this month. The project, which should take a month to complete, will require temporary lane closures along Grand Street between Hamilton Avenue and North Riverside Avenue. Please look for messages from the Village as the start of the project nears and plan to use alternate routes.
Finally, I am very happy to announce that the Secretary of State for New York, Robert J. Rodriguez, has given his approval for the Village’s revised Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP). The Village was one of the first municipalities to have an LWRP when it was first adopted in 1992; the process to update ours began in 2015. Having a revised LWRP which addresses the concerns of today will help the Waterfront Advisory Committee and the Village Board in their reviews of local laws and potential projects.

Expanded Hours Announced for Croton's Food Scrap Recycling Program
Starting on Saturday, March 30th, 2024, members of the Croton Food Scrap Recycling Program will enjoy the convenience of being able to drop off their food scraps in compostable bags at the Croton Point Avenue collection site every Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
The decision to expand the drop-off hours follows a recent survey conducted among program participants. The survey revealed a strong demand for additional drop-off days, with nearly 80% of respondents expressing the need for an extra weekday in the collection cycle. The extended schedule marks a significant enhancement to the program's accessibility.
The Food Scrap Recycling program is open to all residents of the Village. Registration is required. Program registration and other information, including the list of acceptable (and not acceptable) scraps, may be found at the program’s web page at https://www.crotononhudson-ny.gov/foodscrap.

C.L.E.A.N - Senasqua / Croton Landing Community Cleanup

The Croton Litter-Free Education Advocacy Neighborhood Initiative (C.L.E.A.N.) will host a Community Cleanup on Saturday 4/6 , at 3:00 PM, weather permitting. CLEAN is collaborating with Cub Scout Pack 28 on a joint effort to clean the entire waterfront this spring. Please bring heavy gloves and bright clothes. Meet at Senasqua Park. The group will be cleaning Senasqua Park and as much of the Riverfront as possible in preparation for the Village’s Earth Day Celebration.

2nd Annual Croton Gumbo Smackdown Competition

The 2nd Annual Gumbo Smackdown Cook-Off fundraiser will take place at the Green Growler on Sunday, April 7th at 3 pm. Hudson River Education Seminar: Lighthouses Along the Hudson

Scott has lived along the banks of the Hudson River his entire life and is a boater, avid fly fisherman, hiker and historian. Scott is also an accomplished author and has recently co-authored the book “Croton Point Park – Westchester’s Jewel on the Hudson”. Scott has captivated audiences with his prior presentations and we are privileged to have him share his extensive knowledge and understanding of the Hudson River with you all. Croton Point History & Nature Hike

Croton Point Park Naturalist John Phillips and Village of Croton Historian Marc Cheshire will lead a hike on Saturday, April 13, at 9 a.m. to explore Croton Point’s history, natural history, archeology, and geology. The hike will last roughly 1.5 to 2 hours. This event is free. Meet at the gate to the RV park, where parking is available. Ages 6 and up; wear sturdy shoes.

Transmission Lines in the Hudson River: What you need to know about the Champlain Hudson Power Express Project and Clean Path Project

In November 2021, New York finalized contracts for Clean Path, NY and Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) to deliver onshore wind and solar energy from upstate New York and hydroelectric power from Canada to New York City. A significant portion of each transmission line route will be submerged under the Hudson River. On April 26, Riverkeeper's staff attorney Drew Gamils and Habitat Restoration Director George Jackman will provide an overview of the Clean Path and CHPE transmission projects at the Croton Yacht Club. This overview will include a description of each project, status update on each project, and a discussion of the potential environmental impacts and the Champlain Hudson Environmental Trust. This event is free and open to the public.

The challenge is simple - outside your home, business or favorite spot in the village, clean up every piece of trash you can find within 100 yards.
