END OF AN ERA FOR OUR "PANDEMIC PRESIDENT"
As of July 1, 2023, the new MPI New Jersey Board begins their term, and I will step off the Board after 8 years of service. I have held multiple positions starting as Director of Membership, VP Membership, President Elect, President (as my Board fondly called me ”the Pandemic President!) and Immediate Past President.

It is time for me step to the side and watch our new Board take center stage and continue to grow and prosper under the new Office of the President. I gladly take my seat on the Past Presidents Council with my elite predecessors and mentor junior members.

During my time in this chapter, there were many current events that caused us to pivot as we watched our industry come to a crashing halt. We had to re-invent ourselves and reach out to friends and colleagues to help us get through these tough times. Our bond as a chapter grew and extended to other chapters as we worked together on programs and joined forces to keep our members engaged.

MPI involvement helped me to learn more about myself and my industry, grow friendships, and develop leadership skills as I navigated through my positions on the board. It was an honor to bring this chapter to a level of excellence and recognition as a High Performing Chapter.

There are so many aspects of being part of the Office of the President I will miss, but it is time for me to move on and enjoy this chapter from a different lens. Thank you all for your support, see you at the next MPI event.

CIVILIAN ACTIVE SHOOTER AWARENESS

An active shooter is an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area. In most cases, active shooters use firearms and there is no pattern or method to their selection of victims. Active shooter situations are unpredictable and evolve quickly. Everyone can help prevent and prepare for potential active shooter situations.
Unfortunately, these types of dangerous situations have occurred in every type of setting around the nation so it is important to be educated on how to protect yourself and others in this type of situation. This presentation provides guidance to individuals so they can prepare to respond quickly and appropriately if in the proximity of an active shooter.

Learning Objectives:
  • Learn actions to take when confronted with an active shooter and responding law enforcement officials.
  • Learn to recognize potential workplace violence indicators.
  • Learn actions to take to prevent and prepare for potential active shooter incidents.
  • Learn the consequences of an active shooter incident.

MEETS CONFERENCE

Atlantic City was definitely the place to be for April 3-4 for our 3rd Annual MEETS Conference. The day and a half event, held at Harrah’s Resort Atlantic City was a resounding success. The event combined excellent educational sessions with ample opportunities to network and catch up with friends and colleagues.

MEETS started on Monday afternoon with roundtable discussions focused on topics relevant to our day jobs. Great information was shared among industry peers on contracting, budgeting, security and other items top of mind for meeting professionals. Following a behind-the scenes tour of Harrah’s, we closed out the day with a sports-themed reception in honor of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship game happening the same night. Attendees, many wearing the jerseys of their favorite sports teams, enjoyed cocktails, games, great food and lots of laughs!

The learning kicked off early on Tuesday with forums on exploring career opportunities and achieving success as an independent planner. An interactive session on Mastering Your Membership gave attendees the opportunity to ask questions and learn how to get the most benefit out of joining MPI. A series of Ted-type talks focused on industry specific topics including catering to attendees’ dietary needs; managing revenue management and the importance of event safety and security. The agenda also included talks on Empathy, Diversity and Inclusion and Engagement. We ended the educational sessions with an eye-opening panel discussion on Navigating Corporate Moral Responsibility. The educational sessions offered the audience up to 6 CEs for attendance.

The meeting included valuable networking time with industry exhibitors who met with meeting attendees during session breaks and over lunch. There was a mad dash through the exhibit hall to meet with as many suppliers as possible to be eligible for raffle prizes at the end of the meeting.

MPI New Jersey also took the opportunity to give back to the local community. Our generous attendees arrived with new and gently used clothes and monetary donations to benefit the Atlantic City Rescue Mission. In addition, during the event, we assembled care packages with toiletries and food to be distributed by the mission.

Throughout the event the chapter was pleased to be able to “take over” the social media account of MPI for the first time. We shared stories and photos highlighting the day with our extended global community. This was a great opportunity to share our award-winning chapter with a larger audience.

This new signature event for our chapter would not have been possible without the “over the top” efforts and commitment of our MPI New Jersey Education Committee. (pictured above)

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT:
MEET KAREN ELAINE DECKER

What is your favorite thing about our industry?
My favorite part of the meetings and events industry has been the people! It is energizing to be with people who share the same desire to provide attendees with experiences that exceed all expectations. MPINJ has enabled me to learn new ways of doing things and continues my professional development and growth.

What is the most memorable event you have planned or client experience you have had?
My most memorable Event was the first live event we held after the COVID-19 lockdown. The feeling of being together again had a different sense of excitement than all of the years of live meetings. So many minds had to come together to be sure we had the health and safety of our attendees as our top priority, but also make sure we had the secret sauce to pull off a Live Event in 2022. This was no small feat and hence the most memorable.

Calling all MPI New Jersey Members - we want to feature you in an upcoming member spotlight. This is a excellent opportunity to introduce yourself to your fellow members and share your meetings industry journey.
