Review of the Viking Star -

Our Firsthand Account

Carol and I were invited to sail on one of Viking Cruise Lines ocean ships - the Viking Star. Now, Viking is best known for their river cruise vessels that they have developed over the last 20 years. In a recent survey, when people on the street were asked, over 80% said they had heard of Viking River Cruises. In fact, Viking owns about 50% of all the river cruise vessels sailing on European rivers. So, with all this experience sailing on the rivers, it was interesting to see what they would do with an ocean cruise. In a word, they’ve done a great job of it!

Viking River Cruise - On the Eastern Block

I had the pleasure of joining Viking River Cruises on a journey through eastern Europe on their long ship Vilhjalm. I had the most magnificent time!

Our itinerary was the Danube Waltz, with our ports being: Passau, Germany; Linz, Krems and Vienna, Austria; Bratislava, Slovakia; and Budapest, Hungary. We also took a day trip to Cesky Krumlov in the Czech Republic, totaling 5 countries in 8 days and 2 UNESCO World Heritage Sites!

My Visit to Vancouver

One of the sights we visited in Vancouver is the Chinese Gardens. The gardens consist of two sections, one which is open to the public and another which requires paid entry. The paid side is called Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden which offers hourly tours, tea ceremonies, and plants and materials which are all authentic and imported from China, and is also free of charge with the experience pass. I enjoyed viewing the gardens from both sides as they provided different perspectives, though the paid side is definitely less crowded.

The Capilano Suspension Park was one of the highlights of our visit to Vancouver. Apart from the suspension bridge itself, the park offers treetop walks, observation decks, First Nation totems, and a chance to get up close and personal with local wildlife. The park is only 15 minutes from the city center, and offers a free shuttle service from convenient locations in town that departs frequently. The system is very well organized, and the park was also free of charge with the experience pass. Please note, however, that travelers with a fear of heights may be uncomfortable crossing the bridge, as it does sway as you walk across.

Cruising the Peruvian Amazon with

I had the privilege to travel with International Expeditions July 2018; we had a few days of epic Amazonian rain and I was beyond content. Your room’s view is the lush Amazon with floor to ceiling windows so you never think twice about not having a TV. Experiencing the Amazon begins from day one when you get to go out on the river and getting out there doesn’t mean you’re exploring on your own. Each zodiac is equipped with refreshing drinks, cold towels and two amazing naturalists to help you spot the wildlife. It really takes that experienced eye and ear to find you the animals you went there to see with your own eyes.
