American Cruise Lines
“A perfect day in Cuba”
On a beautiful April morning at sunrise, I sailed into Havana harbor. I could only imagine how immigrants felt as they sailed in from Europe for the very first time. We sailed past the ancient El Morro fortress and the welcoming arms of an enormous religious icon protecting the harbor. I watched as the Cuban pilots boarded our beautiful ship the Empress of the Seas to assist our Captain navigating into the port. We passed relics of old piers and slowly arrived at the only cruise terminal.

Peggy and Bruce Harter
Explore the Snake and Columbia Rivers
On the American Pride
My husband, Bruce, and I took a paddlewheel cruise out in Oregon and Washington with American Cruise Lines. We started in Spokane, Washington and traveled down the Snake and Columbia Rivers, following the route that was forged by Lewis and Clark more than 200 years ago.

As we sailed through the Columbia River Gorge we stopped at small towns along the way. Richland, The Dalles, Astoria, and others were some of the places we visited. Daily shore excursions were part of the cruise and enabled us to visit several museums, the Bonneville Dam, the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center, and more. One of our favorite excursions was our visit to Mount St. Helens, the volcano that had erupted in 1980. Because it had snowed earlier in the month we were able to see snow on Mount St. Helens and other parts of the Cascade Mountain Range.

Several of the small towns where we docked were in walking distance from the ship so we were able to explore them on foot. Meals and snacks were included as part of the cruise, but we often chose to eat lunch in these ports to get a taste of the local culture. The ship had a program called “Farm To Table” where they purchased cheese, seafood, fruits, vegetable, and other foods from local producers. Two of our favorites were the silver salmon and the huckleberry ice cream. This program provides a way for passengers to experience the flavors of the Pacific Northwest
Our ship, The American Pride, had a local historian who stayed onboard during the entire cruise. As we sailed down the river he gave daily talks about Lewis & Clark and their adventures. By the end of the week we knew more about Meriwether Lewis and James Clark that we ever could have imagined!

We enjoyed our river cruise and definitely will look forward to planning another one soon, maybe down the Mississippi River or up in the northeast. Our travel agent, Lenny Kopple, always assists us in planning wonderful cruises regardless of where we go in the world.

Egotistical Fred Graham is reunited with his ex-wife when the two are forced to play opposite one another in Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew. The battle continues as it becomes clear that as much as they say they hate each other, they're also
still in love.
This musical is based on the events surrounding the drafting and the signing of the Declaration of Independence…if only our founding fathers can agree to do it! John Adams teams up with Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson to battle those in Congress that oppose the movement to separate from England. Join in the funny, insightful, and compelling journey to pass the resolution that frees America from British tyranny.
Dubai is a city and emirate in the United Arab Emirates known for luxury shopping, ultramodern architecture and a lively nightlife scene. Burj Khalifa, a 2716 foot tall tower, dominates the skyscraper-filled skyline.

At its base lies Dubai Fountain, with jets and lights choreographed to music.

On a man-made archipelago, Palm Jumeirah is one of the three planned Palm Islands The island offers tourists a host of activities to indulge in. From up-market shopping malls to hotels to luxury beach resorts, Palm Jumeirah Islands have it all. It is, indeed, just another example of Dubai’s uninhibited fantasies put perfectly in perspective.

The Ritz Paris has re opened this June 2016 after an unprecedented restoration. 142 rooms and suites have been completely redesigned in the spirit of the Ritz Paris and with the latest technology. Of the 71 suites, 15 Prestige Suites are named in honor of loyal friends of the hotel: Marcel Proust, Ernest Hemingway, Coco Chanel, the Duke of Windsor, Charlie Chaplin, the Prince of Wales, F. Scott Fitzgerald or Maria Callas. Executive Chef Nicolas Sale orchestrates culinary experiences.

Freedom... discovery... energy... inspiration... engagement... serendipity. These are some of the words Backroads guests use to describe why they love exploring by bike and on foot.
Active travel is about journeying through a fascinating region under your own power. On foot and on a bike, you can really get a visceral sense of place. Without any filters, you're free to truly be where you are. The wind in your face. The sun on your back. Reconnecting with yourself and others. The feeling that right now, and for the next few days, you control your own destiny. And always just ahead, the next unexpected moment you'll carry with you forever: a ruined castle shrouded in mist as the sun appears over the mountains... a flock of birds rising in a shimmering cloud from a vast river delta... a waiter lighting lamps on the café tables, saluting the village priest as he climbs the cathedral steps.
