Research Tip:
Using WorldCat Discovery

You may have noticed the WorldCat Discovery link and search box on the library's homepage . So what does it do?

WorldCat Discovery is an application that helps users find and access resources available not only at RHEC library, but also throughout libraries worldwide, with a single search.

Here's an example search to show how it works. Let's say I'm a student wanting to research education for individuals with autism. I go to RHEC library's homepage and use the quick search box.
search box showing the search terms autism education
I will get a list of results sorted by relevancy, with RHEC Library holdings prioritized. Tools on the left side of the screen can narrow the results using parameters like full-text availability, format type, publication date and topic.

My first result is for an eBook. I can see it's held by the RHEC Library. I can click 'View eBook' to access it immediately.*

I also see a result for a print book held by the RHEC Library. If I click the 'Held by Roanoke Higher Education Center Library' link, I will be taken to the catalog, where I can check availability, see the call number and even place a hold.

Now I see an article I'm interested in, but the RHEC Library doesn't own it. If I click on the article I will see additional information, as well as a button to request it through interlibrary loan. If I click the interlibrary loan button, I'll be taken to a request form already populated with all of the article's information. I submit the request and 1-2 days later it's waiting for me in my e-mail's inbox.

What else can I do with my results? I can save them in a list to keep track of my research, and email that list or individual results to myself or others. I can also create citations for results automatically in any format from APA to Turabian!

Consider trying WorldCat discovery the next time you perform research. It's an easy way to search all different types of material, even beyond just books and journals. Results may also include video and films, theses, dissertations, encyclopedia articles, music, archival material, and more. All of the world's library collections are one search away!

*Keep in mind full-text access to most RHEC Library-owned material is only accessible while connected to the RHEC network (wired or wi-fi), or if you've already created an account with the provider, like EBSCO.
