Rachel's COTA, Emily, uses the Vecta Station to determine what type of input can be calming and regulating for her, which improves her ability to cope and better participate in the activities of daily living.

Wendell Foster is grateful for the continued support from our community. We would like to give special recognition to Owensboro Health and PNC Bank, who provided funding through community grants for the purchase of the rock wall and Vecta Mobile Sensory Station. These important additions to our facility allow us to provide the best care possible to those we serve. Thank you, Owensboro Health and PNC, for being Wendell Foster Difference Makers!

"Our Legacy" Series
Over the past 75 years, the legacy of our founders, Wendell and Edith Foster, has grown to impact thousands of lives through their non-profit organization, Wendell Foster, Inc.

In an effort to share little-known parts of their history, we have created "Our Legacy" - a series of stories that will appear in our newsletters throughout the year. If you have a story about the Foster family that you would like to share, please contact Erin Lee in the Community Engagement Department at: [email protected].
A Legacy of Faithfulness
"You know, you have to be pretty careful what you pray about, because you might get it."
- Mr. Wendell Foster, Interview with Henry Wilson; 1984

It is no secret that the Foster family credited their faith to the growth and sustainability of Wendell Foster. When an interviewer asked Wendell about finances for the organization, he replied, "Those just came from prayers and nice people."

Many stories have circulated throughout the years of the ways God provided for the residents and staff at Wendell Foster in the midst of obstacles - especially from the early days when the Fosters were still heavily relying on donations for basic needs such as transportation, equipment, and even food.
Miracles came in the form of therapists knocking on the door in search of a job, not realizing how desperately Wendell and Edith had been searching for someone to join their staff.

Or, when 365 community members showed up on Derby Day to help the Fosters to build the All-Faith Chapel (which they finished in twenty-four hours).

And, since the Fosters never turned away a child who was in need of care - they only charged the families a dollar a day for services - any time they were able to pay the teachers, therapists, and other staff members it was a constant reminder of God's provision. Wendell recalled in an interview, "there was times that we didn't think that we were gonna be able to pay 'em...but it always come through. Always."
One of the most powerful examples of answered prayer came from a particularly tough time when food was running low. So low, in fact, that the Fosters weren't sure how they would feed the children in their care. The only thing left to do was pray and trust that God would provide what they needed. The next day, a group of farmers showed up out of the blue with several baskets full of fresh produce and groceries, ready to donate all of it to the children at Wendell Foster.
Children praying, in thanks, for the food provided by local farmers.
The Fosters remained steadfast in their beliefs throughout their lives. Their faith gave them the courage to take the simple idea of a home and school for local children with disabilities, and grow it into so much more. Today, Wendell Foster provides over 65,000 services each year to people of all ages with disabilities. Our state-of-the-art facility has become well-known for our person-centered care, and people from all across the country seek us out to help their family members. We are able to provide transportation, assistive technology, and community living options. Our message of inclusivity and respect has extended into schools and surrounding communities with campaigns, clubs, and events. As we consider where we started and take pride in what we have become, may we always remember the miracles and answered prayers that got us here, and honor the legacy of faithfulness Wendell and Edith left within Wendell Foster.
Thank you to the Daviess County Public Library for sharing the transcript of the interview between Wendell Foster and Henry Wilson. Subscribe to our newsletter for more stories from the "Legacy" series!
