IN THE NEWS

York University's School of Medicine receives green light!

Today is an exciting day for the City of Vaughan and the province of Ontario. I was thrilled to join Premier Ford to officially announce the approval and funding of York University’s School of Medicine, located in the Vaughan Healthcare Centre Precinct (VHCP). When ready, this new School of Medicine will help address the doctor shortage in our community. I want to thank the Premier, the Government of Ontario and York University for today’s funding announcement as part of the Ontario Government’s 2024 Budget.

The partnership between the City of Vaughan, York University, Mackenzie Health and ventureLAB envisions the VHCP as a magnet for excellence in health research, education, commercialization and more. Vaughan is well on its way to becoming a world-class health innovation destination.

Performing and cultural arts centre plans take centre stage!

I am excited to announce our plans to work with QuadReal to build a performing and cultural arts centre in the VMC. It is a critical opportunity to attract ambitious young talent further, provide technology and services that contribute to other sectors’ success and cultivate a distinct sense of place that attracts interest, opportunity and investment. Vaughan remains the economic engine of York Region, accounting for 35 per cent of all businesses, 36 per cent of all employment and 36 per cent of all economic output in 2023. These statistics are incredible – but they represent what we are, not who we are – and to tell that story, we need to establish our city’s soul through the arts. The arts move and thrill us; they nourish our spirit and connect us, bringing us closer to each other and ourselves. The arts and creative industries are big business and some of the world’s most rapidly expanding sectors. Becoming a leader in these sectors will strengthen our economy and offer Vaughan untold opportunities. We’re excited to be planning Vaughan’s next act.

RECAP FROM MARCH

I delivered a keynote address at the 2024 Vaughan Chamber of Commerce Annual Mayor’s Luncheon to an audience of over 650 community leaders – including business owners and government representatives – about the arts and creative industries, which Council has consistently identified as an area of opportunity.

The City of Vaughan hosted its inaugural Nowruz celebration. Thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate!

The City of Vaughan celebrated International Women’s Day with a morning of networking and learning to recognize the contributions of women and reaffirm our commitment to removing barriers to advancing gender equality. Thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate!

Vaughan is one of the fastest-growing cities in Canada with a rapidly increasing population, as our city is a place many people dream of calling home. One of the City of Vaughan’s top priorities is managing this expansive growth and building Vaughan for current and future generations. To guarantee more affordable housing options for our residents, today, the City hosted a Modular Housing Symposium with industry leaders and different levels of government to discuss modular housing. I want to express my appreciation to Francesco Sorbara, Member of Parliament for Vaughan-Woodbridge and the Honourable Robert J. Flack, Associate Minister of Housing, and Eisa Lee, Founder and Partner Architect of xL Architects, for their time, expertise and dedication to reducing barriers to affordable housing. Together, we will continue to seek new and innovative ways to build more homes in Vaughan.
