Dear Friend of the BABC, 

The beginning of 2017 has brought us a number of compelling and relevant events for our Members; here is a recap of recent BABC activities and information on what is to follow.

In March, the BABC's annual British Expats Evening took place , generously hosted by Global Money Transfer c ompany, OFX. The evening afforded both newcomer and established attendees the opportunity to network and learn from our member experts the key steps they should be taking to mitigate risks surrounding their tax and immigration status.  Also presented were some important "plan-forward strategies" to gain a strong credit profile as well as how best to manage any retirement plans left in the UK. Moderated by Jason Kumpf from OFX, t he panel consisted of: Tax: Charlotte Wall, (Spott Lucey & Wall), Immigration: James Mayock (E & M Mayock), Banking/Credit: Arnaud Sintes (Bank of the West), Retirement: Charles Cockerton (Florin Pensions LLC) .
This year our BABC flagship event 'Global Words of Wisdom', will cover the current status of Brexit. I offer my thanks to BABC Patron Member Hogan Lovells and Premier Member Fitzgerald & Law for bringing this event to our community and to HMCG Andrew Whittaker for joining our panel. "The UK Government has officially notified the European Commission of its intention to withdraw from the European Union. While the majority of BritishAmerican Business members had not been in favor of leaving the EU, they remain fully committed and ambitious when it comes to their business in the UK and in the transatlantic economy.

Our members want the UK to remain an attractive place to live, work and invest in. For that to work, it is imperative that the UK makes its relationship with the EU work for business and that Government delivers on its promise to offer the business community a clear and realistic time frame and pathway for an ambitious future relationship with the EU, post-Brexit, right from the start of the negotiations."

From The Consul General's  Desk
By now, many of you will have heard of the horrific attacks on London last month. As a result, I thought it best to reiterate the Prime Minister's words following the attacks.

Terrorists have a clear aim and that is to create discord, distrust and to create fear. But we are not afraid, our resolve will never waiver in the face of terrorism.

The location of this attack was no accident. The terrorists chose to strike at the heart of London, where people of all nationalities, religions and cultures come together to celebrate the values of liberty, democracy and freedom of speech.

The streets of Westminster - home to the world's oldest Parliament - are engrained with a spirit of freedom that echoes in some of the furthest corners of the globe. And the values Parliament represents - democracy, freedom, human rights, the rule of law - command the admiration and respect of free people everywhere.

That is why it is a target for those who reject those values.

Any attempt to defeat those values through violence and terror, however, is doomed to fail. We will not allow voices of hate and evil to drive us apart. We will not give in to terror. We will move forward together.

While we've stepped up police patrols, and made a commitment of £2.5 billion was made to invest in global security, intelligence networks and additional counter-terrorism experts, it's the million acts of normality that are the best response to terrorism.

These events, though, also provide a reminder of the exceptional bravery of our police and security services who risk their lives to keep us safe. These exceptional men and women ran towards the danger even as they encouraged others to move the other way.

So thank you to those who serve to keep us safe and thanks to our friends and allies who have made it clear they will stand with us.
