Dear Friends of the AFF-
This has been an emotional time with the devastating loss of our friend and champion Norman Stokle.  No one was more passionate than Norman about promoting French culture in the valley. This month we present a lecture he arranged for the Alliance.

Sunday, April 17, 2:00 p.m.
Le Salon de Refusés of 1863
A lecture given by Ms. Leslie Batty
What is the Salon des Refusés?
The Salon des Refusés refers to an art exhibition held in Paris in 1863 to show paintings that had been rejected by the selection committee of the “Paris Salon”-the official annual showcase of French Art.  It drew huge crowds of more than a thousand per day, many of whom were particularly affronted by the scandalous nudity on show in Manet's oil painting "Le Dejeuner sur l'herbe" (The Luncheon on the Grass), which depicted a female nude having a picnic with two fully dressed men in the Bois de Boulogne.

Looking for a creative and fun experience?  Join us for our paint event on May 7th from 2:00-4:00 at the AFF office.  Come alone or bring some friends to learn from a trained artist step-by-step how to paint the beautiful painting shown below.  A great Mother’s Day idea!  Seating is very limited, sign up today!

Help Wanted-
Due to other commitments, we have lost three board directors and are in need of new volunteers. We would like to thank Director Ellie Garabedian, President Fredo Martin, and Director Linda Motschiedler for serving on the board. We appreciate the time and unique talents they shared, and look forward to seeing them at events in the future. We are currently looking for members who are interesting in becoming more involved in the AFF by joining our board. We meet a minimum of once a month and are involved in decision making, participating, planning and organising events and activities. If you are interested in learning more about being more active in the AFF, please e-mail us at

Adieu to a great friend of the AFF-

The AFF lost a huge presence with the loss of our beloved Norman Stokle in February.  An author, playwright, director, actor, lecturer, professor, and accomplished musician, former AFF vice-president and longtime board member, event organizer, and French teacher for the AFF, he was the heart and soul of the AFF as well as other organizations dedicated to knowledge and culture in Fresno.  Norman befriended, encouraged, taught, mentored, inspired, and entertained a huge number of people in many countries in his life, most recently here in Fresno.  Our condolences go out to his family, locally his brother Gerry and sister-in-law Ellie, an AFF board member and treasurer.  The Stokles requested contributions to the Alliance, and we sincerely appreciate the response received.
