Check out what patrons had to say about D91's facilities
Parents, patrons, students and staff recently had the chance to share ideas about issues the district should consider as it looks to improve school buildings. Those who couldn't attend the April 9 community meeting provided input by completing an online survey.

They responded to questions like when a facility should be considered for replacement, what should be done when a building is being over-utilized or under-utilized, what are current perceptions of our building and what new programs should be offered in D91.

The results of that outreach are now available on the project website. The district's administrative team and steering committee will review the results and begin drafting options and recommendations, which will be presented to the community at the next community meeting scheduled for May 15 at Skyline High School. Again, an online survey will be available for those who can't attend the meeting.
Next Step provides character development for D91's 6th graders
When the Idaho Falls Police Department suspended the DARE program last year because of a shortage of officers the district began researching character development programs that would meet the social and emotional needs of students.

A team of 6th grade teachers, counselors, administrators, parents and a community member have led this effort. After extensive research, the committee has selected the Second Step Program, a development and drug prevention program that is used in schools across the country.

It was selected because it is comprehensive and addresses current and relevant issues including topics such as making good decisions, drug and alcohol prevention, friendships and bullying. It also includes a component to include parents, which the committee felt was important. Before the end of the year 6th graders will cover three units -- tobacco and marijuana, alcohol and inhalants and hope and planning.

The district is continuing to look for more opportunities for students to build relationships with police officers, which was one of the strengths of the DARE program. We hope to do that by working with IFPD to expand the Blue in the School program. The district and IFPD are also increasing the number of resource officers in our schools.
Beyond the Bell celebrates its second year
The Beyond the Bell after-school program is celebrating its second year. The program funded by a federal 21st Century Community Learning Center grant provides extended learning and enrichment opportunities for students at Dora Erickson Elementary School.

More than 100 students are currently enrolled in the program. It begins after school with recess and snacks. Students then take part in an academic block featuring literary and math lessons with homework support. Afterward students can pick an enrichment class and then everyone takes part in activities such as art, science and PE. The day ends with snacks and a story. Over the last two years the program has partnered with more than a dozen community organizations such as INL contractors, the Idaho Falls Police Department, ARTitorium, Boy Scouts of America, Idaho National Guard and more. Congratulations to program director Christina Fullmer and her staff!
Time for input on science materials
Parents, patrons and staff have the chance to review new K-8 science materials, which are aligned with the state's newly adopted science standards. A committee of teachers has spent the last year reviewing several options before recommending the following materials to the Board of Trustees:
  • Kindergarten: Picture Perfect Science by National Science Teachers Association Press.
  • Grades 1-5: Building Blocks of Science 3D by Carolina Biological Supply Company.
  • Grades 6-8: STEMscopes by Accelerate Learning, Inc.
The Board of Trustees is expected to adopt the new science materials at its May meeting. A committee of secondary teachers will spend the next year reviewing high school science materials. The plan is for those materials to be adopted for the 2020-21 school year. Questions or feedback? Send them to us.
D91 shares fields with community groups
The district works to make its facilities easily accessible to the community. As part of that effort, the district recently met with community groups to coordinate field use for the upcoming school year. The annual meeting includes groups such as Grid Kid Football, Idaho Falls Lacrosse, BYSL soccer, IF Rugby and more. Dozens of teams will be using our fields as well as our gymnasiums in the coming school year. It's a great way to show off our facilities!

Are you using sunscreen correctly?
Sunscreen is often our first line of defense against the sun, are you using it correctly?

Research has warned that although most people know that we should apply sunscreen for protection before going out in the sun, we don't know how to apply it correctly.

A new study from King's College London suggests that people typically apply too little sunscreen for it to be at all helpful. The way sunscreen is applied plays an important role in how effective it is.

Takeaways as we enter the season of fun in the sun:
  • Use a higher SPF, 30 or higher, to ensure you get the right amount of protection, even if you don't apply the lotion thick enough.
  • Use more lotion, apply the lotion thicker than you normally would. This will reduce damage significantly.
  • Use other means of protection along with sunscreen. Wear hats, clothing to cover skin and seek refuge from direct sun.
Bring Mindfulness Home
Connecting with your family is crucial to everyone's well being. Here are 5 ways to keep in mind as you make the effort.
  1. You do have time. It can often feel like there isn't enough time to really connect. See if you can slow down enough to find small moments in each day to connect - from saying "good morning" in a loving way or doing something thoughtful.
  2. It's not all about you. It's hard not to take things personally when someone speaks to you in a rude or unkind way. When you can take their action as a message that the other person is having a difficult time you can begin to relate differently.
  3. Really listen. We often confuse hearing for listening. Next time you ask your loved ones how their day was, make sure to really listen. Take in what they're saying without projecting what you feel or expect onto their words.
  4. Keep in touch with loved ones. Families need to be in touch with each other. Not everyone is 'touchy-feely,' but touch can be soothing and communicate both a feeling and a sense of connection that words alone cannot convey.
  5. Have an attitude of curiosity. Close family members often see each other and assume they know how the other is going to act in any given moment. We're constantly changing and evolving. See what's new.
