Economic Development and Health Unit
The Farmer-to-Farmer (F2F) Program in Colombia is underway with the new Country Director, Sergio Asmar. The program will focus on national horticulture sector development. Volunteer assignments are open for Guatemala, Dominican Republic, Guyana, and Jamaica. The Agricultural Volunteer Opportunity Project (AVOP) hosted its first global seminar for the F2F community in April. Bill Thomas, USAID Environment Officer, provided information on mitigating environmental risks and safe pesticide use. AVOP will soon be launching new F2F programs with grant competition winners.
Child Protection Unit

The CPU visited Costa Rica this month to follow up on the U.S. Department of Labor-funded project Improving Enforcement of Labor Laws in the Agricultural Export Sector of Costa Rica. This project is implemented by FUNPADEM in coordination with Partners. While there, the team met with local stakeholders such as the Ministry of Labor and Social Security of Costa Rica, and the Monitoring, Control, and Surveillance Network to learn and discuss project implementation.


Education and Global Citizenship Unit
The Career Connections Seminar for U.S. Exchange Alumni hosted its second event in Denver, Colorado from April 24 – 26. The event welcomed 52 guests, ranging from U.S. Exchange Alumni representing programs such as Fulbright, Critical Language, Boren, Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange, and Peace Corps to speakers and presenters that included career diplomats, U.S. Department of State professionals, and career development experts, among others.
U.S. State Department Recognizes 50 Years of Paraguay/Kansas Partnership
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recognized Partners' 50-year-strong partnership between Kansas and Paraguay. Over that time, the Comité Paraguay Kansas and Kansas Paraguay Partners have connected people and organizations across borders to change lives. In Paraguay, our programs increase study abroad opportunities and fight against child labor, forced labor, and human trafficking.
Partners Supports Study Abroad With Senator Paul Simon Bill
U.S. Senators Dick Durban (D-IL), Roger Wicker (R-MS), and Patrick Leahy (D-VT) reintroduced the Senator Paul Simon Study Abroad Program Act , on April 11. Partners has and continues to be a supporter of the bill, which creates a competitive grant program for institutions of higher education to expand study abroad opportunities for American college students. It is named after the late Illinois U.S. Senator Paul Simon, who promoted the value of international education for the United States' success.
Best Practices: Virginia Santa Catarina, Brazil Chapter
The Virginia - Santa Catarina, Brazil Chapter shared best practices for an impactful and successful chapter. These practices include how to adhere to by-laws and regulations, communicate well internally and externally, fundraise effectively, focus on strategic planning, and retain members and volunteers.
PartnersCampus Network Celebrates Global Youth Service Day
From April 12-14, the PartnersCampus Network served their communities for Global Youth Service Day (GYSD). We highlighted the diverse ways in which PartnersCampus EAFIT and PartnersCampus UPAL volunteered in their local communities to better the world. GYSD is the only event in the world that celebrates the capacity for youth ages 5-25 and their communities to thrive by organizing for change.
Partners D.C. Staff Celebrates Earth Day
Partners of the Americas Washington, D.C. staff celebrated Earth Day on April 22 by discussing and learning how to incorporate eco-friendly habits into our everyday lives. Senior Program Officer Summar Lyons presented ideas of how staff can reduce our carbon footprint at home, in the office, and in our communities.


Grameen Foundation Launches Farmer-to-Farmer Program in Colombia
Grameen Foundation, a sub-grantee of Partners’ Farmer-to-Farmer (F2F) Program, has recently launched its five-year program in Colombia. Through this initiative, Grameen Foundation will support Partners' development of rural enterprises and farmers’ associations across poverty-stricken areas. Agriculture is a cornerstone of Colombia's ongoing redevelopment, and through Partners' F2F, Grameen Foundation strives to generate rapid, sustained and broad-based economic growth.



Colombia Avanza Meets with Stakeholders to Discuss Strategies to Eradicate Child Labor
At the Committee of Coffee Growers event in Tolima, Colombia, Partners Colombia Avanza team presented the Project as well as the Agreement signed with the National Coffee Growers Federation of Colombia (FEDECAFE) in February 2019. The Project emphasized the importance of upholding Resolution 1796 of the Ministry of Labor that establishes which work activities are prohibited for children and adolescents in Colombia. The Director of Social Development at FEDECAFE, Rodrigo Calderón, stated that child labor in the coffee sector starts simply from children tagging along with their parents to work.
