Message from the Board
Hi KKC Members,

Spring is here! The days of beautiful weather have seen more people on the courts and in the pool. And the Covid pandemic finally seems to be receding, thanks in large part to the vaccine rollout. Santa Clara moved into the less restrictive Orange Tier during March, and, if trends continue, could move into the Yellow Tier sometime during April.

The Kona Kai staff and Board are watching for any changes in the County Health guidelines that could allow the club to ease the various Covid-related restrictions that are in place.

We hope to be able to open the locker rooms by the end of April, although likely with limited capacity. Both the Men's and Women's lockers are currently being painted to freshen them for opening.

Members' key cards may also be reactivated upon further easing, so try to locate your cards, as there are fees to replace lost cards.

Turning Kona Kai into a movie set has been delayed for a few months, while the production deals with unspecified delays - a Hollywood thing, we understand.

Planning for pool improvement continues: a Pool Renovation Committee has been formed, and they have been visiting nearby community pools, and brought in experts to inspect and make recommendations. The city and state codes have been changed over the years, and we have to figure out exactly what needs to be done.

Finally, we are sad to bid farewell to our longtime manager, Sharon Schedler, who has guided us through so many ups and downs over the years, culminating in her quick and expert leadership as Kona Kai had to quickly adapt to the Covid-19 pandemic. Thanks and farewells have been pouring in from so many members who have become close with her. She'll be greatly missed. Thank you, Sharon!

The Board is working on personnel issues - Stay tuned for new staffing announcements.

We hope to see everyone at the Club,
Kona Kai Club Board of Directors

Dear Members,

There was an incident at the Club on Saturday, March 20th where it was reported that a Member spoke inappropriately to the Club Manager. The Board has created an independent and confidential committee to investigate the incident and would like to hear from all those with relevant information. If you’ve already submitted your observations there’s no need to resubmit, the committee will reach out to you.

Please know that the Board does not support or tolerate behavior that makes staff or other members feel uncomfortable or unsafeWe are committed to keeping the Club safe and family friendly for all Members and their guests.  If you happened to witness this incident please contact the independent committee at this confidential email address: confidential@konakaiclub.org and they will arrange a time that you can give your information and description to them.  All identities will be kept confidential to protect safety and privacy.

We all want to move forward and to put this incident behind us so that we can once again focus on the work of keeping the Club compliant with the Covid restrictions, according to the County's ever changing rules. The Board is eager to plan for continued reopening of the Club as soon as that becomes allowed under the County Health ordinances.

Please be assured we are committed to keeping Kona Kai the Club safe and respectful for everyone.

Recycleball is a nationwide nonprofit dedicated to helping reduce the waste and environmental impact of Tennis. Tennis balls, unless recycled, can be incredibly damaging to the environment, so Recycleballs was created to reduce the waste by having tennis players recycle their balls by placing them into a receptacle. Kona Kai is proud to introduce our partnership with Recycleballs. Bins will be placed around the tennis courts, where members will deposit the tennis balls to be recycled. A sponsorship plaque will be displayed above the bins. Kona Kai does not currently have a sponsor though if you are interested, your name (or that of your group or business) will be prominently displayed as a supporter of tennis at Kona Kai and a supporter of our environment and the Recycleballs program!
