Enjoy a complimentary dinner paired with an interactive session focused on the latest innovations shaping a healthier world. The discussion will be led by health experts Dr. Kenneth W. Goodman and Julia Smila. Brought to you by Venture Cafe Miami and the World Affairs Council of Miami.

Dr. Kenneth W. Goodman will share his research on Bioethics and Health Policy, emphasizing issues in health information technology and in epidemiology, and public health. His most recent book, Ethics, Medicine, and Information Technology: Intelligent Machines and the Transformation of Health Care analyzes issues in biomedical informatics.

Julia Smila, Co-Founder of Unicorn Lab and Biohacking Congress, will share the necessity of a self-care system that entails functional lab testing and individual interpretation, accompanied by individualized protocols that you can follow to build your health proactively, not reactively.

The World Affairs Council of Miami is partnering with the American Jewish Committee and Temple Judea to host Oleg Ivanov, whose work focuses on Jewish and Eastern European affairs, for a presentation on the impact of Russia's invasion on the Ukrainian Jewish community - the 3rd largest in Europe.

The program will also feature the following panelists: Consul General Andreas Siegel of Germany, Consul General Catalin Ghenea of Romania, and Consul General Vincent Floreani of France. The event will be moderated by Brian Siegal, Regional Director of the AJC, Miami and Broward County.

The Crisis in Myanmar and the Role of ASEAN featuring Ambassador Derek Mitchell, President, National Democratic Institute (NDI) and Former US Ambassador to Myanmar

Join the World Affairs Council of Miami for a virtual Distinguished Speaker Series event with Ambassador Derek Mitchell, President, National Democratic Institute (NDI), and former U.S. Ambassador to Myanmar.

From 2012 to 2016, Mitchell was America’s first ambassador to Myanmar in 22 years. From 2011 to 2012, he served as the U.S. Department of State’s first Special Representative and Policy Coordinator for Burma with the rank of ambassador.

Prior to this appointment, Mitchell served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense, Asian and Pacific Security Affairs (APSA), in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. In that capacity, he spent six months as acting APSA Assistant Secretary of Defense and was responsible for overseeing the Defense Department’s security policy in Northeast, Southeast, South, and Central Asia. For his service, he received the Office of the Secretary of Defense Award for Distinguished Public Service in August 2011.

What's Next for U.S. Foreign Policy on Russia and the Ukraine Crisis? Featuring Heather Conley, President of the German Marshall Fund

Join the World Affairs Council of Miami for a virtual Distinguished Speaker Series event with Heather Conley, President of the German Marshall Fund.

Prior to arriving at the German Marshall Fund, Heather Conley spent 12 years at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), where she most recently served as senior vice president for Europe, Eurasia, and the Arctic and as director of the Europe, Russia, and Eurasia Program. At CSIS, Ms. Conley developed the acclaimed Kremlin Playbook series, a dedicated research effort that examined the doctrine and methodology of Russian malign economic behavior and its methodology across Europe. 

Ms. Conley has also served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs with responsibilities for U.S. bilateral relations with the countries of Northern and Central Europe. She co-led the U.S. interagency effort to enlarge NATO and secure Senate ratification of an Amended NATO Treaty, and she created a senior-level U.S. dialogue with the eight Nordic and Baltic states, the Enhanced Partnership in Europe (e-PINE).

Congratulations to Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High!

On Saturday, April 2, 2022 the Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High Global Trojans won the South Florida Academic WorldQuest competition! The international affairs trivia contest pitted 12 teams of up to 4 students each from across Miami-Dade and Broward County in 100 different questions. In second and third place were the MAST Academy Mama Makos, and Alonzo and Tracy Mourning Senior High Team 1, respectively.

The World Affairs Council of Miami will send the Global Trojans to Washington, D.C. the weekend of April 29, 2022, where the South Florida students will represent their high school, city, and local Council in the National Academic WorldQuest championship weekend.

The visit to Washington includes the competition, unique programming planned to enhance the global education experience, and an opportunity to meet and engage with approximately 250 like-minded peers from around the United States.
