BroadbandBroadband Speed Test and Survey
WE NEED YOUR HELP TO IMPROVE BROADBAND!
One of the Broadband Enhancement Council's (BEC) main priority is to generate better mapping information for those who have broadband and those who are under-served (less than 25 meg. down and 2 up) or un-served.  The mapping information generated by the FCC is of little help painting an accurate representation of actual service.  So the BEC has created a web-page with a speed test and survey to identify the user location down to their street address.  We hope to get as many folks in the state to take the speed test and fill out the survey so we can create accurate maps down to the address level.

Region 4 and Fayette County were awarded a CDBG grant to study how best to move forward with broadband in our areas.  As part of this study, we need to collect as many speed tests in our county as possible and as widely as possible. We encourage citizens to test their speeds at home and work as often as they can. West Virginia is 48th in broadband.  To improve economic development, give students the same tools as other kids in communities with broadband and improve rural medical care, we need to do everything we can to improve broadband.

Greetings Chamber Members,

While the mission of the Chamber is to promote, support and encourage the business community, this event will be a true community event that will engage members of the entire family. Introducing Ayusa - Foreign Exchange Student Program
Hello, My name is Jennifer Slinker.

I have been hosting foreign exchange students since 2010. I recently became a Community Representative for Ayusa and love to share my experience in hosting students from overseas in my home.  If you want to change the world, you can start small. Cultural and educational exchange with a student from abroad who is eager to learn about American customs is a great way to change the world.  Did you realize foreign exchange is actually a part of our American foreign policy?  You will be amazed at how much you learn by hosting a student in your home, and how close you can become to them in 5 to 10 months.

I look forward to helping you share your part of West Virginia and American culture. I have over 300 students that are looking for an opportunity to come to America this fall. Please contact me at email or go to www.ayusa.org to learn more information about hosting a student today!

NRBirdingNew River Birding Festival
NewRiverBird
Since 2002, the annual New River Birding & Nature Festival takes place in and around the New River Gorge National River in the heart of the upland, hardwood forests that Cornell Lab of Ornithology identified as a crucial stopover habitat for the continued survival of species such as Golden-winged, Blue-winged, and Swainson's Warbler, as well as the Scarlet Tanager. This bird and nature watching festival highlights more than 100 bird species on a variety of birding tours.

A friendly birding vacation for everyone, the week long event features guided birding and nature excursions, world-class speakers, the finest collection of guides, tasty food, and a back-porch atmosphere unmatched by any other birding festival . Signature guided bird watching experiences include the opportunity to visit a wide range of habitats, world class instruction for those wanting to enhance their birding skills, and the best guide-to-guest ratio on the festival circuit. All skill levels are welcome.

Options range from weeklong with cabin accommodations to a single day without lodging. With such a range of options we are able to offer packages to suite a variety of budgets, beginning at $225. Each day offers a fascinating field trip of your choice, three great meals, two knowledge and fun packed presentations, world-class experts and fellow participants you will call friends!

As a non-profit fundraising event, the Festival is the major funding source for the local 501C3 Fayette County Education Fund, Inc providing student environmental and leadership training programs.

April 25th, 5PM - 9PM

Pies & Pints in Fayetteville will be donating a portion of dinner sales to support Active Southern West Virginia's free community programs on Wednesday, April 25th, from 5pm to 9pm. This is a great opportunity to have a fantastic meal, show support for our regional volunteers, and spend the evening visiting with the Active SWV staff and board members.

We invite you to come enjoy dinner and support local, free community programs. ASWV programs include Community Captains leading guided hikes, outdoor yoga, Tai Chi, mountain biking, rock climbing, stand up paddle boarding, and dog walking at the humane shelter for local families who maybe new to some of these activities.

Funding also supports Active SWV Kids Run  Clubs at elementary schools throughout Nicholas, Raleigh, Fayette, and Summers Counties. With 21 schools who have participated, we are half way to the goal of our region's 42 elementary schools having a free Kids Run Club.

Active SWV continues to grow in two other programs; Bike/Walk SWV and Workplace Wellness. Both programs look at environmental and policy changes needed to improve a culture of health.

There are many ways you can get involved and we hope to see you out on April 25th for a fun and functional dining experience!

October 12/13, 19/20, 26/27, 2018
The Mad Butcher is coming back to the New River Gorge this fall. Dare to explore old abandoned buildings and dark corners of an adventure resort hidden in the woods. Campers and hikers have seen things here that will make your bones turn cold. Be careful not to stir the shadows, or creatures lurking in them. You never know who or what's watching... maybe what's left of those people who never checked out... maybe the thing that keeps them here. Just don't scream, or they'll find you.

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month

Just For Kids Child Advocacy Center along with hundreds of other organizations across West Virginia will be hosting events during Child Abuse Prevention Month.

The first event will be a "Plant A Pinwheel For Prevention" and Proclamation by the Mayor of Beckley on Tuesday, April 10th at the Mayor's Office on S. Kanawha Street in Beckley (10:30am). Mayor Rappold is excited to host this event again this year. "To see the look on the children's faces when they plant a pinwheel is priceless. Knowing that there is hope for our children and simple ways to reduce the incidence of child abuse is so refreshing." "And a big thank you to Just For Kids, local law enforcement and the Child Protective Services team for making a difference for the children of Beckley."

The second event will be the Just For Kids Champions of Children Recognition Dinner to be held on Thursday, April 26th from 5:30-9pm at Glade Springs Resort. This year we are recognizing two Champions from each of the three counties that Just For Kids serves. Our Champions from Wyoming County are Child Protective Services Supervisor Rebecca Libby and Sergeant Andre Palmateer, WV State Police. Raleigh County Champions are the Honorable John A. Hutchison, and Senior Trooper Jillian Yeager, WV State Police. Fayette County Champions are Corporal John Syner, WV State Police and Sue Lessman, donor of The Lessman House, our new office in Fayette County.   This year we will also be honoring a 9th Grader who had the courage to advocate for a school group of abuse survivors to meet at her middle school. The group met throughout the school year and continues to meet, helping children recover from the trauma of abuse.

Tickets for the event are available by calling the Just For Kids Child Advocacy Center at 304-255-4834 or sending a check to Just For Kids, 129 Main St., Suite 406, Beckley WV 25801. Individual tickets are $50 and half price for first responders and other social service providers. Live entertainment and a sit down meal are part of this exciting event.
