People Connections by Laura Frick

President's Letter

We did it!  We’re crashing into the end of the year and checking off all the boxes.  The Docents have been making incredible progress with the mounting for the Art Show.  Looking forward to the always impressive finished product in the Fisher Cafeteria from 5/5-5/9.  Mark your calendars to help welcome classes to tour the “gallery”.  We will also need loads of volunteers for setup and take down Friday (5/2) and Friday(5/9).

Finishing off the year with some great news!  There was some concern about getting enough volunteers to fill all the Big Data Art presentations with both lead and helper docents so late in the year.  We asked and you responded!  Thank you to everyone who reached out and said they would help to make it happen!  Dates are set for the last 2 weeks in May.

Please take a moment to enjoy the image above from Laurie Frick and her collection, People Connections.  You may recognize the artist’s name from our current Big Data presentation.  In this project she set out to analyze not just the data we create ourselves, but data from the impact of people around us.  “I set off to analyze the effect of all the people I could remember from childhood ‘til now who had an impact. Categorized by the nature of the relationship, color coded by type and level of intensity all in an excel file. Every little square has meaning, the connections knitting them together can mean even more.”

Imagine we all have our own personal People Connections work with our own data.  The Art Docents would be there! Hoping the space representing Art Docents, the relationships we form with one another and the children we serve, continues to be a big bright square!

Volunteer Highlight

As part of the Sunshine Committee’s Mission In 2024-25 we are going to show recognition for the contribution by one or more docents each month with a write-up in the Palette Newsletter.

This month, we are delighted to recognize two incredible women whose behind-the-scenes efforts keep the Art Docents of Los Gatos running smoothly: Rohini Sharma and Nancy Colah.

This month, we are thrilled to spotlight Rohini, a dedicated and longtime member of the Art Docents of Los Gatos. Since joining in 2018, Rohini has been a vital part of our organization, previously serving on the board and currently leading the charge as the head of our Hospitality Committee.

From general meetings to seamlessly coordinating special events, Rohini manages it all with grace, precision, and a contagious smile. Her efficiency and eye for detail have truly made event planning an art form of its own. Rohini makes it all look effortless—and we know just how much effort goes into it!

We are so grateful for Rohini’s warmth, dedication, and tireless behind-the-scenes work that helps keep our docent community connected and thriving. Thank you, Rohini!

Nancy joined the Art Docents in 2020 and serves as our meticulous and deeply dedicated Treasurer. She manages the finances for our entire organization, ensuring we stay fiscally sound and financially on track. In addition to her work as Treasurer, Nancy is also an active board member, offering steady guidance and thoughtful insight that helps shape our direction. Though she works quietly behind the scenes, her impact is profound—ensuring that everything runs smoothly, sustainably, and with care.

We are so grateful to both Rohini and Nancy for their outstanding contributions. Your dedication, professionalism, and grace make all the difference. Thank you!

Thank You to the Town of Los Gatos & Community Partners!

A big thank you to the Town of Los Gatos for generously funding our recent Docent Appreciation & Recruitment Event! This special gathering was not only a chance to show our gratitude to our incredible volunteers, but also an opportunity to educate the community about what we do and inspire new members to join us.

We are also so grateful to Centerpiece Flowers in downtown Los Gatos for welcoming us into their beautiful shop and hosting a flower making workshop. And a huge shoutout to our amazing PR Committee for organizing such a thoughtful and engaging event.

Thank you to the Los Gatos Recreation Center for giving us the opportunity to host our greeting card workshop for your vibrant 55+ community and thank you to our own docent Izzy Delling for teaching this fun workshop! We’re excited to build partnerships within the community and hope to inspire some of your members to join our organization and share their creativity with the next generation.

Thanks to everyone's support, we’re excited about the future and hopeful that more community members will be inspired to volunteer with us!
