JacobsenEYE ON DESIGN: JACOBSEN ARCHITECTURE

Cafrittz
As real estate agents , strolling around DC neighborhoods and admiring the residential architecture is one of our favorite Spring pastimes. Sometimes we do a power walk from Rock Creek Park to Georgetown University and back where we pass by the P Street studios of Jacobsen Architecture . The firm  includes the father-son team of Hugh Newell Jacobsen and Simon Jacobsen - the senior Jacobsen is responsible for the landmark N Street Trust and the 1993 addition to the United States Capitol. The Cafritz Georgetown, pictured left, is a spectacular blend of architectural elegance and functionality.

Each Jacobsen building is unique, linear, and full of light. Homes are designed as pavilion style residences that pay homage to the concept of the traditional American homestead. This vernacular architecture favored "outbuildings" - detached rooms such as kitchens, or smokehouses - the quintessential feature of rural American homes.

When showing a listing at Watergate West once, we fell in love with Simon Jacobsen's renovation of our favorite tier known as "the point" with a wraparound terrace facing the Potomac River. Jacobsen enclosed a portion of the spacious living room with a glass wall to create a home office while retaining the light and openness of the original space.

Planning a May day trip? We highly recommend visiting  Boxwood Winery  in Middleburg, Virginia, pictured below. Simon Jacobsen designed the winery to honor the evolution of cultivating grapes into wine - patrons are able to observe the entire fermentation process as they sip in the central area. In 2007, Boxwood was honored with the Merit Award for Architecture by the American Institute of Architects, Northern Virginia Chapter. Situated among bucolic pastures, this celebrated winery is a must visit for any wine aficionado!

While the Boxwood Winery design is modern, the building incorporates traditional 18th century building materials- fieldstone, seam metal roofs, and cupolas.

ShawdiningDINING IN THE DISTRICT: SPOTLIGHT ON SHAW

Dinos food

Thally

red chili sauce.
Shaw is a DC neighborhood rich in vibrant history! Home to Howard University and the birthplace of jazz legend Duke Ellington, Shaw is one of the District's most beautiful urban landscapes. Over the last decade, renewed investment in this little neighborhood has locally-owned restaurants and bars thriving. Here, we share two of our favorites -  Dino's Grotto for bistro Italian and  Thally for happy hour.

Between T and U on 9th, Dino's Grotto is serving rustic Italian cuisine - homemade pasta, house charcuterie, fried artichokes and dessert tortes. Chef-owner Dean Gold brings sustainable and seasonal fare to the Shaw food scene, sourcing produce from local organic farms. Sundays from noon until 4, Dino's does bottomless brunch, offering innovative twists on DC weekend staples like eggs benedict with rosemary and orange scented hollandaise. With great dinner specials every night, bring your own bottle of wine Sunday thru Tuesday (with no corkage fee) to enjoy with your pasta - we recommend the traditional fettuccine alfredo!

Located on 9th near Blagden Alley,   Thally boasts an incredible selection of local beers, ciders, and custom cocktails with sodas and syrups crafted in house. Chef Jesse Long is continuously evolving the menu, highlighting the freshest ingredients of the season. We recently enjoyed Thally's catering at a broker's open held next door at Darryl Carter's studio for 10Eleven new construction condos. Try the brussel chips and Ms. Rosemary Bulleit, a summer whiskey cocktail sweetened with white vermouth, maraschino liqueuer and house-made ginger soda, to taste why Thally is one of our favorite happy hour haunts!

Katelyn Casey
"We first met Wayne Johnson at an open house about a year before we were truly serious about buying in D.C. As first time homebuyers in the competitive D.C. market, we had little clue about how things worked, but Wayne was there every step of the way and made things go quite smoothly. Wayne was as comforting and available throughout this process as we could have hoped for. Our schedules did not permit typical weekend open house viewings much of the time, and Wayne was more than accommodating to that, taking us on numerous after-hour visits to various properties in D.C. He truly had a "24/7"mentality and was extremely responsive to our emails and calls. Case in point: when we finally found our dream home, Wayne quickly arranged a viewing and worked with us to get an offer in that same evening, despite hosting his own open house that same afternoon! Wayne has expertise, knowledge, and experience throughout D.C., and we could not be more pleased with his service throughout this new, complex, and often times stressful process. We highly recommend him to anyone looking to buy in D.C.!"

"Kara Johnson is the crème de la crème of Realtors. Her attention to detail, professionalism and superior knowledge of the market were indispensable in my real estate transaction. With her hand on the pulse of the market, she was able to give me keen advice on how to list my property: from preparation, staging to proper pricing. Obviously her formula paid off as the house sold in only 5 days! I am very happy I chose to work with her, and I recommend that you do as well!"
