House Memorial Resolution
For Selena Quintanilla "The Queen of Tejano"
On April 16th, I laid out a resolution to recognize Selena Quintanilla Perez, the "Queen of Tejano". Selena represents a balance of Mexican and American heritage, and is a role model that many Latina women and girls, including myself, can relate to.
Committee Update:
Juvenile Justice & Family Issues
We have now heard 132 bills in the Committee on Juvenile Justice & Family Issues so far including my bills, HB 675, HB 3009, HB 3005, HB 3007, and HB 3008.

As bills are heard in committees, I encourage you all to stay up-to-date with important legislation by visiting the Bill Tracker on my website.

The House committee on Juvenile Justice & Family Issues meets every Monday at 10 AM.

Committee Update:
Natural Resources
This month I laid out my bill, HB 1143 relating to pathogen-related fresh water data, in the Natural Resources Committee.

Pathogens are microbes that can cause disease and illness if they are present in water. This bill would require the most recent information on pathogen levels in freshwater sites to be accessible by the public. It was voted out unanimously and is on it's way to be read on the House Floor.

The House committee on Natural Resources meets every Tuesday at 8 AM.

The 87th Session's Bad Bills:
The Fight to Protect Texas Continues!
We have heard a number of bad bills on the House Floor this session, including HB 1927 better known as the "Permitless Carry" bill, which would allow the carrying of handguns without a permit in Texas. I opposed this legislation and in an attempt to change the language to lessen the many faults in this bill, I put forward an amendment which would allow police officers to disarm those carrying handguns in government buildings.
Bill Highlight:
HB 3823- Civil Penalties for Signs Placement
I laid out HB 3823 in the Transportation Committee this past month. I want to convey my gratitude to Houston Vice Mayor Pro Tem and Houston City Council Member Martha Castex-Tatum who provided testimony on why this bill would be helpful for cities.

Staff Spotlight:
Patricia Newman
Patricia Newman is the Legislative Assistant for my office. She joined the team after graduating from Texas State University with a Bachelor's of Liberal Arts in Political Science.

She aims to establish social justice for women, the LBGTQ+ community, and individuals experiencing homelessness..

She plans to move to Washington DC after session to join the foreign service with the U.S. Department of State to expand democracy and social justice across the world.
