6th, 7th, and 8th Grades
Sailing Expedition
The experience from a 7th grade student:
On April 18th, I went on a field trip to the Matthew Turner tallship and Bay Model with 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. The Matthew Turner was built in 2017. The Matthew Turner was built as a replica of a tall ship that once held the record for sailing from San Francisco to Tahiti, the fastest until another boat beat it. Their record was 19 days. I learned how to raise a sail and lower a sail. I also learned a lot of terms for example, rope is a line, pulley is a block and so much more. The Matthew Turner someday wants to sail to Tahiti.
The Bay Model is huge. My first reaction when I saw it was "wow!!!" It is used to predict the flow of an oil leak. They do this by putting food coloring in and watching it to see where it flows.
We saw lots of seals. The seals would go on the dock o sun bathe. It seemed like he seals didn't mind the people. It was really awesome because it was pup season so there were lots of baby seals with their moms. The mom seals were brown and the baby were grey.

7th Grade Rube Goldberg Machine
The 7th grade learned about Mechanical Physics as they embarked on creating their Rube Goldberg Machine. The objective was to squeeze toothpaste from a tube onto a toothbrush. A Rube Goldberg machine is intentionally designed to perform a simple task in an indirect and overly complicated way, relying on chain reactions. The 7th graders presented their successful machine to each class and will now continue on with pearly white teeth.

Playtime at DWS
Playtime allows children to use their creativity while developing their imagination, dexterity, and physical, cognitive, and emotional strength. Play is important to healthy brain development. It is through play that children at a very early age engage and interact in the world around them. As they master their world, play helps children develop new competencies that lead to enhanced confidence and the resiliency they will need to face future challenges. Undirected play allows children to learn how to work in groups, to share, to negotiate, to resolve conflicts, and to learn self-advocacy skills. When play is allowed to be child-driven, children practice decision-making skills, move at their own pace, discover their own areas of interest, and ultimately engage fully in the passions they wish to pursue.

New Gate on Campus
Thanks to the craftsmanship of RB Cope Contractors, we have a beautiful new gate! RB Cope contractors is owned and operated by the family of a current student and two of our DWS alumni. This new gate adds a homey and safe feel to our campus. Not only was Robin able to add our Davis Waldorf School logo to each door, but he also added the gorgeous Waldorf sun to the top for an added natural effect. A huge thank you to Robin Cope and his team for making our campus even safer and more beautiful.
