"Restore our Earth" What a powerful sentiment. Find out more when you read our Changemaker's Writer Circle below.

When life around the world returns to normal, our world cannot return to business-as-usual. Mass amounts of damage has already been done, but that does not mean we have to continue that legacy. We have the ability to make a difference in every industry, but that can only happen when we work together to #RestoreOurEarth. The Hey, Blue! initiative facilitates moments of meaningful connection between police officers and members of their community by offering intentional opportunities for individuals to meet and share positive experiences.
Inspired by the extraordinary acts of heroism displayed by both individual community members and first responders during 9/11, Verdi EcoSchool co-founder, John Verdi, wanted to build a platform that could bring police officers and communities together with a shared purpose.

We Stand in Solidarity with the Black and Asian Community
Ben & Jerry's as a whole and our local shops stand in solidarity with both the Asian Community and the Black community during this difficult time. One verdict is not justice. As Ben & Jerry's put on twitter: "Finding one officer guilty does not exonerate a legal system that has perpetually brutalized Black and Brown communities." As independently owned Ben & Jerry's locations we are some of the few locations across the U.S. that are Minority owned. This fact alone shows it is time for nation wide change. Our shops also stand in solidarity with the Asian community and the increase in Anti-Asian hate crimes. As one article articulated we cannot whitewash the two movements into one as the issues are unique and we must look at everything with an intersectional lens but also individually. However, it does not mean that we cannot stand together and support each other. “Talking about how both Asian and Black communities experience violence can be helpful in showing how much our communities have in common when it comes to battling white supremacy,” (Gen Medium). Our Ben & Jerry's locations continue to fight for social justice, and racial healing. During this difficult time do not hesitate to reach out if you are needing something from our social mission team.
Each Ben & Jerry's location has a sweet Changemaker, which is a community ambassador who serves on the ground to help with our social mission program. Our shop's changemakers live across the Southeast and range from age 16 to 50+. What a group. Cone you believe it? We have reserved this space for our Changemakers to write on issues they are passionate about. Let's see what they had to say.
Earth Day Everywhere and in my Community, By Summer, Athens Georgia

April is here and spring is in full swing, and what better way to celebrate than to celebrate Earth Day! Earth Day 2021 is all about restoring our Earth.
Here in Athens, UGA’s Office of Sustainability is hosting events such as an Earth Day Global Community Cleanup where members of the community and everywhere are encouraged to take time to clean up the community. The Office of Sustainability is also hosting an Earth Day Art Challenge where students and members of the Athens community are to enter a piece of art that encourages and “celebrates what it means to be a caretaker of people and the planet.
Although living sustainably can be difficult, it is possible. A sustainable practice I enjoy participating in is thrifting. Thrifting is a great way to reduce water usage and carbon footprint while also finding fun, affordable things. Sustainable practices can be fun as well as good for the planet. Celebrating Earth Day is a great way to start implementing these practices into our lives because as important as it is that we celebrate this day, it is even more important that we live as if every day is Earth Day.
Our everyday actions have caused irreversible damage to the planet, but there are things that we can do to give back to the Earth. A great resource for finding ways to help to restore the Earth and play your part this Earth Day is earthday.org. Some of their tips for living more sustainably are:
  • Try picking up trash when you are in the park or on a walk
  • Purchase a reusable grocery bag
  • Switching from paper billing to online billing
  • Donate to organizations like The Canopy Project
What the pandemic taught us about us! By Paul, Houston Texas

We recently had a revelation in society that is, because of the pandemic we were able to see what it is like to get taken out of our comfort zone. Covid engaged us in a manner that has affected all aspects of our life, but it is sad that Covid-19 has also at times been an igniter as to increase in family/domestic violence. The Houston Chronicle ran a story on this matter on August 15, 2020, on the stay at home order coupled with economic distress (one source said) “would further isolate victims and compound violence”. The women's center placed 96 more people in hotels from March to June than the prior year during those months.

This information is not new, however, it will remain relevant as long as these family dynamics exist, and especially since we have spent more time in the confines of our own homes amongst one another in these times of stress and confusion where family should be pivotal in rising above our circumstances. In many cases being around our loved ones, and families can have negative impact on our relationships. Let's be honest most of us spend so much time in the trappings of our routines sometimes we are not in tune with our loved ones as we would assume we are or would like to be, and that can definitely unravel our bonds where we build on our professional lives and ostracize those at home.
