Dear Church,

Easter has passed and Spring is upon us. I feel freer and more lively. I am inspired and informed by the blooming trees and emerging people. I know that change is inevitable. Spring reminds me that change can also be really, really splendid.

In the church calendar, we also see lots of changes. Jesus' long life of miracles, healings, teachings and controversies has reached its human end. Christ has died and Christ is risen! Eastertide presents this strange season in which the Risen Christ walks around for 40 days zipping in and out of locked rooms, walking uninvited next to the dudes from Emmaus and hanging out with his buddies on the lakeshore. (Cue the Zombie Jesus memes!) Before summer hits, Jesus will ascend into heaven and leave us all alone again. From June on, all we get is the Holy Spirit...God's own energy directing our thoughts and deeds.

"Whoever says "I abide in him" ought to walk just as he walked." (1 John 2:6). The Holy Spirit is connected to God, but it is exemplified in Jesus. We ought to walk as Jesus walked: with humility, compassion, mercifulness and service. Like spring, this kind of life can be quite splendid, as our time and our lives are filled with deepening relationships, effective service and rich insight into the human condition.

My prayer for you this season is that you will embrace the changes around you and allow the Risen Christ to guide and shape your lives.
