Opening day is here! Baseball is back -- a sure sign that summer is just around the corner!
The warmer temperatures and longer days are a welcome relief after a long winter. It's a great time of year to get outside and enjoy some fun exercise in the fresh air, whether it is walking, running, biking, team sports or even yard work. If you've been a bit of a couch potato this winter, make sure to ease yourself in to your exercise routine; it's better to start slow and easy so you can enjoy your summer activities rather than pushing too hard and being benched during one of the best seasons of the year! Remember to make chiropractic care a regular part of your wellness plan to keep you at the top of your game!

|Neurofeedback Brain Training Eases Tingling, Numbness Associated With Chemo
Chemotherapy is a highly toxic treatment for cancer that takes a physical and emotional toll on the body. While effective at destroying cancerous cells, the side effects that chemotherapy drugs leave in their wake can be debilitating and demoralizing. Persistent nausea, muscle aches, gastric upset and bruising/bleeding are common symptoms that plague chemotherapy patients, not to mention hair loss, fatigue and cognition issues known as "chemo brain."
Many side effects do eventually resolve themselves when treatment ends, however some may never go away. In fact, studies show up to 91% of cancer patients being treated with chemotherapy experience pain, numbing or tingling in their hands or feet which can be long term for many, making tasks of daily living challenging and increasing the risk of fall. Few medications are available to treat these side effects, and some have serious additional side effects themselves.
Researchers at the University of Texas MD Anderson Center studying neurofeedback for Chemotherapy Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (CIPN) have observed "clinically and statistically significant reductions in peripheral neuropathy following neurofeedback techniques," noting reduced scores for worst pain, activity performance, numbness, tingling and unpleasantness. Other studies have shown that neurofeedback is effective in reducing "chemo brain" and improving cognitive function.
Neurofeedback is a powerful non-drug therapy for healing from chemotherapy's side effects. Check out my video above on neurofeedback and CIPN and then call our office to schedule a QEEG brain map and how learn how brain-wave training can help reduce the pain, numbness and tingling of neuropathy as well as clear up chemo brain. We're offering $50 off your initial brain map during April.

April is Autism Awareness Month
April 2 marks the 9th celebration of World Autism Day --the official kick-off of Autism Awareness Month, a time to increase understanding, acceptance and further support of the 3.5 million Americans that are affected by autism.
Autism is characterized by impairments in social interaction, developmental language and communication skills as well as rigid, repetitive behaviors. It is a growing global health crisis; In the US, the prevalence of autism increased by 119.4 percent in just 10 years -- from 1 in 150 in 2000 to 1 in 68 in 2010.
Early intervention can help to limit deficits and maximize the child's learning potential. It is important to recognize the signs and to schedule a screening with a pediatrician well versed in neurobiological disorders to get an accurate diagnosis. Non-drug therapies like chiropractic neurological care, cognitive behavioral therapy,
neurofeedback brain-wave training
and specialized diet can help to alleviate many of the classic symptoms associated with autism such as stimming and flapping, as well as attention and gut issues.
Autism is difficult for others in the family too, and can be emotionally, physically and financially draining on loved ones. Family counseling can help create a nurturing and positive environment and strengthen relationships. Stacey Spata, our New Life Wellness team psychologist, offers counseling for families on the spectrum. Call our office to make an appointment with Stacey: 631.265.1223.
It's Opening Day! Make Chiropractic Care a Priority for Your Young Athlete
Baseball is officially here -- as is spring soccer, lacrosse, track and golf season. Young athletes today have a wide choice of sports from which to choose, and many do play multiple sports year round. Fierce competition to be the best, to get that coveted scholarship or even hope for the major leagues pressures some young athletes to specialize at 13 or 14 years of age in one particular sport. Studies show that kids who specialize burn out quickly and are up to 93 percent more likely to be injured than those who play multiple sports.
Exercise fuels the body and brain, helping to pump new neurons for improved brain function. Encourage your child to try his/her hand at different sporting activities. Take steps to ensure a fun and safe sporting experience by ensuring your child:
1. Wears proper equipment -- make sure helmets, knee pads, chest protectors, etc. are functioning
properly and worn properly to prevent injury.
2. Eats well-balanced meals -- following a healthy diet helps promote optimal performance.
3. Maintains a healthy weight.
4. Keeps hydrated -- avoid sugary power drinks!
5. Takes high quality multivitamins (check out our
6. Stretches out before and after exercise and games. Following a regular warm-up routine helps
stretch muscles, reducing the risk of injuries such as torn or ripped muscles.
7. Gets proper rest between games.
8. Follows a regular sleep routine, getting at least 8 hours of sleep per night to help your child
perform at his/her best (irritability and sluggishness can signal fatigue).
A chiropractic exam assesses imbalances in the spine, knees, shoulders and other areas of the musculoskeletal system, and can help in the recovery from sport injuries. If your child is involved with collision sports, make chiropractic care a part of your sports season wellness care. Should an injury arise, we have many non-drug therapies that can help facilitate rehabilitation to help get your teen or tween back on the field and ready to play. Remember, addressing injuries in the younger years helps prevent complaints due to "an old football injury" and other skeletal problems later on in life.

Acupuncture Provides Pain Relief Alternative to Opioids
The numbers of opioid-related deaths are staggering -- painkillers now cause more
overdoses in America
than any other illegal drug. Recent
recommendations by the
American College of Physicians (ACP) to avoid prescribing narcotics for lower back pain reflect the alarm about the growing opioid epidemic. ACP now urges physicians to opt for natural pain relief options, such as chiropractic and acupuncture, as a first line of treatment for pain.
Acupuncture is an effective natural pain reliever that stimulates specific acupoints throughout the body with thin needles to increase the levels of various "feel good" chemicals, similar to opioids, in the central nervous system --namely, endorphin, serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine. Unlike opioids, there is no "tolerance build up," no addiction potential or any other serious side effect. Acupuncture has also been shown to help reduce
stress and blood pressure, as well as improve sleep and digestion.
If chronic pain controls your everyday living, why not give acupuncture a try? Lori Fortunato LAc is an experienced acupuncturist who can help you heal and get back to doing the things you love.
Acupuncture is often a covered insurance benefit -- we'll be happy to check with your insurance provider.
Private pay patients -- take advantage of Lori's April offer of $25 off your initial visit. Call to make your appointment today: 631.265.1223.
