Brenda, 17, plans to become a public health researcher focusing on sexually transmitted infections in low-income communities. She owes her new aspirations to her mentor Maximilian who introduced her to the varied career paths in health care. He specializes in global health at a government agency. Until a few months ago, Brenda thought she'd become a doctor. That was at the beginning of her experience in LAYC's Teen Health Promoters program, which trains high school students to be peer health educators and participate in clinical or educational internships with local clinics or hospitals. The program also pairs students with professionals in the field, such as Maximilian, to support the students' exploration of real-world careers in health care.

Sponsorship Opportunities
LAYC's Gala is our premier special event. Proceeds support high-quality, multilingual, culturally sensitive programs that prepare young people to succeed in college, work, and life. We welcome sponsors from business, research, policy, philanthropic and civic organizations, as well as from private individuals.

Join the LAYC Associate Board

The LAYC Associate Board is now accepting new member applications for the 2017-18 term. Deadline to submit an application is Friday, April 14th.

Partner Spotlight: engageDC at The George Washington University Honey W. Nashman Center for Civic Engagement and Public Service

Every afternoon, students from the neighborhood come to LAYC's DC Teen Center for after-school programs in academics, art, media, and leadership. We are proud to be a community partner with The George Washington University's (GWU) Honey W. Nashman Center for Public Service and Civic Engagement through engageDC.

Staff Spotlight: Franklin Peralta, Promotor

Almost 17 years ago to the date, Franklin Peralta first made his mark as a staff member at LAYC. What he's done in those 17 years is hard to put down on paper-from the countless number of youth he's mentored, to the amount of center-wide activities he's supported, to the hours he's been there listening and encouraging-Franklin's contributions to LAYC and to the youth who walk through our doors has been felt deeply by so many people.
