A Family's Cherished Land Preserved

110 acres of woods and farmland on the water

The Royce family knew that Billy Royce would have wanted to protect his land on Jaffrey's Mountain Brook Reservoir, even though he didn't get the opportunity to do so in his lifetime. Billy took pride in his large vegetable garden, and he was known for his massive woodpiles -- 14 cords he split and stacked by hand each year. But how could they achieve his wish to see the land cared for across future generations?

You can help a local endangered species

Blanding's turtle is an endangered species in New Hampshire. One of the biggest threats to its survival is the rate at which wetlands and nesting habitat are compromised by development. Land conservation is essential to the long-term survival of this turtle. Want to know what you can do to help the Blanding's turtle (as well as other turtles in this state)? New Hampshire Fish and Game has some tips for you.

Join us at the Historical Society of Cheshire County in Keene, N.H., to hear the history of our ever-changing forests. Drink & Do Good
Thursday, April 25 from 4 to 11 p.m.

On this evening, 10 percent of sales at Cooper's Hill Public House in Peterborough, N.H., will be generously donated to the Conservancy as part of their "Drink & Do Good" series. The restaurant and bar will also be offering a special "conservation cocktail" all month long, with $1 from each sale going to the Conservancy. What a good excuse to get together with friends and raise your glasses to local land conservation!

As Earth Day approaches, I encourage you to get outside and enjoy what nature has to offer. I, for one, will be out in the yard with my family, readying the ground for planting season.

While we appreciate the planet every day of the year, it's nice to have a specific day to reflect on our connection to the Earth. Wouldn't you agree?
