Serving Indiana

Are people with lupus at increased risk for infections?

                                                Scroll down for the answer.

Dear Friends,

May is just around the corner and we have so much in store for LUPUS AWARENESS MONTH!  The picture above shows the "Beacon of Hope" at the Indianapolis Zoo lit purple last year in celebration - we have made even more requests in 2016 and hope to have some new downtown Indianapolis sites participating with us this year. Thanks to Eli Lilly and Company who will dye its fountain outside the corporate headquarters purple and the Alexander Hotel, which will once again glow purple on May 20th - Put on Purple Day.  You can ask buildings in your community, too! If you place a purple light bulb at your front door in May or a local business agrees to help shine a light on lupus, we ask that you please send pictures our way to so we can post to social media and our website as a thank you!

Another great way to get involved in May is to talk to our office about volunteering. Our Walks would not be possible without the help of all the terrific volunteers who help make our event a safe and fun experience for the participants. Individuals and groups are welcome to volunteer for either the Crown Point or Indianapolis Walks. We have shifts starting at 7:30 a.m. all the way through 1:00 p.m. with roles including: site set-up, registration, parking; kids area, route guides, finish line cheerleaders and clean-up crew. We appreciate the help of the community in supporting this year's Walk events and ensuring their success. Please call us today to learn how you can lend your assistance to our efforts. The Indianapolis Walk, in particular, is recruiting additional Walk Committee members. Start by completing the Volunteer Form on our website at

Join us in wearing purple on May 20 and ask your friends and family to wear purple to help support those living with lupus. Our office has purple wristbands and other LFA-Indiana swag available for purchase by calling us at 317.225.4400 or emailing to  Send your pictures of your purple parties to - we will post on Facebook all day on May 20th. When posting on your own, please use the hashtags #POPIndiana or #PutonPurpleIN.  We hope to see you at one of our many May events in our chapter territory. Please let us know if you have your own event planned - we are happy to help promote or lend assistance!

Channel 4 newscasters will once again don purple during the morning newshour - be sure to tune in! If you are looking for more resources and tools to plan for and promote Put on Purple Day, click here.

Enjoy the month ahead and happy Spring!

Infection Prevention is In Your Hands

We want to talk about one of the most important things you can do to protect yourself or your loved ones with lupus - hand washing. We do it every day, but are we doing it right? Knowing how to wash your hands properly and knowing when to wash your hands is key to avoiding infections for people with lupus.  READ MORE

When you have lupus you are at increased risk for all kinds of infections. There are two main reasons for this higher risk. First, lupus itself can make infections occur more often - the way lupus affects the immune system can sometimes limit the body's ability to fight off foreign invaders, such as bacteria and viruses. Second, people with lupus often take immunosuppressive medicines to control their overactive immune system. These drugs limit the ability of the body's immune system to respond, and can leave a person more open to infection.
