What's Emily Reading Right Now?
Emily Shapiera, Bridgenorth's new branch librarian, is an avid reader, food preserver, and gardener. Emily just finished reading "The 100 Mile Diet." Here's why she recommends you give this book a read:
"In a time where climate change is reported as one of the top issues that Canadians are concerned about, and the climate change movement led by Greta Thunberg has inspired millions, The 100 Mile Diet offers a closer look on the challenges and benefits of eating locally. Follow Alisa and James, two Vancouverites who decided to only eat food that came from within a 100 mile radius of their home after learning that the average ingredient in a North American meal travels 1,500 miles from farm to plate. While this led them to have to become creative in finding substitutions for some ingredients in their pantry (such as swapping honey in place of white sugar), along the way they met their local farmers, learned what it means to eat seasonally, and discovered a world of new flavours and ingredients they never knew were right outside their doorstep.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in environmental issues, is looking for inspiration on how to live more sustainably, or to anyone who loves reading about year-long challenges. This book made me more eager to chat with the farmers at my local farmers market and dive deeper into learning about the food I eat!"
The 100 Mile Diet can be found online at the
CloudLibrary
