Here at the nursery, April is in full flower explosion mode. We still have more plants than we know what to do with, and so many of our plants, shrubs, and trees are now in bloom! Please come visit to see how beautiful it all looks. Please also enjoy our monthly special. All Lavenders and Indoor Pothos are now 20% off.

Lavender and Indoor Pothos
Lavender (Lavandula) is a genus of 47 known species of perennial flowering plants in the sage family, Lamiaceae. It is native to the Old World, primarily found across the drier, warmer regions of the Mediterranean, with an affinity for maritime breezes. (Source: Wikipedia)
Pothos (Epipremnum aureum) is one of the easiest indoor plants to grow, with lush green or variegated leaves that grow full and trail. Pothos do well in both bright and dim indirect light and do not require frequent watering, making them among the more resilient plants during time away from home or a spell of forgetful no-watering.

What's New at the Nursery...by Steven Froess
Hello Everyone!
It's time for the April nursery newsletter. March flew by with some of the warmest weather we've seen so early in the year. April seems to be starting off cooler, with a more typical weather pattern. This month is by far my favorite of the year (and not just because my birthday falls in April). The garden tends to flourish the most this month.
Plants are growing and blooming as everything seems full of life. Birds are out with their young, pollinators are busy, and sunshine is abundant. Along with the sunshine comes heat and dryness. Remember to make sure your irrigation runs on a regular cycle for thorough watering. Early morning is the best time, and I try to remind everyone that newly planted plants need frequent hand watering during the first few weeks for the best results.

April is for flowers! The abundance of flowering plants this month is truly astonishing. With all these flowers, the pollinators are also arriving. Pollinators (butterflies, bees, birds, etc.) are crucial for our ecosystem. One of their key roles is pollinating our edible plants, allowing fruit to grow so we can harvest it. It is vital that we do everything possible to support these essential helpers.
We've already heard from our customers that Monarch butterflies are arriving much earlier this year. We have Asclepias (milkweed) in stock to ensure food sources for their offspring. It seems the monarch's population has increased significantly since last year, so let's do everything we can to continue supporting their migration. It’s going to be a long year!
| | | Other excellent plants that provide nectar for monarchs and other butterflies are available. Ageratum 'Monarch Magic' is a top choice. I started seeing this perennial last year, and the butterflies absolutely love it. The brightly colored purple flowers are eye-catching and make a great addition to containers or gardens. Gomphrena 'Fireworks' is another favorite of mine. The blooms last nearly year-round, and their shape is perfect for butterflies. | | There are several types of Verbena that produce clusters of colorful flowers, mostly purple. However, in ground covers such as Proven Winners’ brand Superbena, you can find many other beautiful colors. Pentas are also returning and beginning their long bloom cycle. These plants offer clusters of bright flowers that attract both butterflies and hummingbirds. Many types of yarrow are entering their spring bloom cycle. This hardy native has been hybridized to create more varieties of colorful flowers, all ideal for gardens and pollinators. | | |
Let's not forget some of our bee-friendly plants, including lavender, one of our plants on sale this month. I must say, it's hard to keep track of how many different types of lavender there are, and new varieties keep emerging every year. Lavender has many uses, from herbal to culinary, and attracts few pests.
Spanish lavender can be identified in a few ways. First, it is among the earliest of the lavenders to bloom each year, and second, it has small ribbons atop its flowers. French lavender and many hybrids will bloom later. The last to bloom are English-type lavenders, which are most often used for their oils. They are also very versatile since they can grow in containers or in the ground, but they require plenty of sunlight. Additionally, they prefer rocky, unamended soils. In fact, they tend to perform worse if you amend the soil with organic matter like compost.
| | | Many new plants arrive this month. Roses have arrived and are in bloom, starting their first cycle. Some of my favorites include Yves Piaget, Pope John Paul II, Heavenly Scented, Neptune, Radiant Perfume, Just Joey, and Julia Childs. Unfortunately, David Austin roses won't arrive until the end of the month, as they're late-blooming this year and need more time. | | | |
Early hydrangeas are starting to bud, especially the mophead types, which usually bloom closer to Mother's Day. These are typically blue/purple (keep pH low with acidic elements to maintain the color), white, and pink.
Veggies and herbs are in full growth mode, with new shipments arriving every week. This month features some of the best selections of tomatoes, peppers, squash, strawberries, cucumbers, beans, eggplant, melons, herbs, and more. Be sure to refresh your soil with fertilizer for the best results. Slow-release fertilizers are ideal. My personal recipe includes Recipe 420 potting soil, Agrowinn 4-4-6 fertilizer, worm castings, volcanic rock dust, and E.B. Stone Soil Booster.
| | From the indoor greenhouse, Pothos are on sale now! There are lots to choose from, including solid green and lime, as well as all the variegated varieties. The greenhouse continually looks spectacular, as Hanna brings in new, beautiful, healthy plants every week. | | | |
I'm excited about the now-constant flow of plants coming in. I'd like to mention a new variety of bush bougainvillea called Burgundy Queen, which we have in limited supply, as well as Sphaeralcea Louis Hamilton. This one is growing in my garden at home (see pic below).
Grafted Grevilleas are still looking great. This is an excellent flowering plant for screening, as it can grow 10-15' tall. Honey Gem, Amber Passion, Majestic, and Sylvia are some great varieties. The hummingbirds and honey bees will be in heaven.
| | The hanging basket combinations Hanna has been putting together with Proven Winner plants are looking amazing, with even more to come! I'm also excited that we now have stocked wine and whiskey barrels, sourced locally and made from oak. These make great natural-looking planters (yes, there are drain holes). There is so much good stuff you have to come by and see it all! | | |
If there's ever anything that you can't find, please stop and ask one of our helpful staff or me. We are happy to search for you, and if we don't have it in stock, we can special order it for you.
As always, I look forward to seeing you all at the nursery!
Your Local Horticulturalist,
Steven

April in the garden means warmer weather and longer days with no fear of frost. We are overflowing with flowering plants and herbs & vegetables - the selection is incredible. Anytime this month is a great time to start incorporating soil amendments, sowing seeds, and putting in transplants. The soil is dry enough to be worked without compacting it, the air is warm enough to enjoy working outside, and the soil temperature is ideal for germinating all kinds of seeds and getting transplants growing well.
Herbs: If you haven't already, it's time to start a culinary garden with basil, cilantro, chives, curly or Italian parsley, lavender, oregano, sage, and thyme!
Vegetables: There's just a little time left to plant beets, lettuce, and radishes. In late April, plant only the heat lovers: beans, corn, cucumber, eggplant, melons, okra, peppers, summer squash, and tomatoes.
