"How Government Policy Drives Market Returns" Webinar
Actions in Washington, D.C., c an be a powerful leading indicator for investment returns. CFA Society Portland and CFA Society Seattle have invited members of CFA Society Idaho to attend a webinar with Ben Phillips, the Chief Investment Officer of EventShares and MarketDesk, on May 7. He will discuss opportunities to discover "policy alpha."

By identifying big changes in government policy, investors can uncover "policy alpha" opportunities at the sector down to the individual security level. Policy catalysts also yield uncorrelated return opportunities outside of the economic cycle. Learn how to identify and position portfolios to benefit from long-term policy themes.

Mr. Phillips serves as the Chief Investment Officer of EventShares and oversees portfolio management. EventShares manages the only government policy-based fund globally. The firm strives to identify changes in government policy and invests based on actions in Washington D.C., which can be a powerful leading indicator for investment returns. Mr. Phillips is also a founder and Managing Director of the actionable market insights firm MarketDesk Research. Previously, Mr. Phillips was with Goldman Sachs Asset Management (GSAM), where he had portfolio management responsibilities across several multi-sector total return funds. Prior to GSAM, he held senior investing roles at Providence Equity Partners and Lord Abbett. Mr. Phillips is a CFA charterholder and received an MBA and BSBA in Finance from the University of Missouri.

CFA Institute News: Curriculum Freeze and Virtual Town Hall
Due to the decision to postpone the 2020 CFA exams, CFA Institute has chosen to freeze the 2020 CFA Program curriculum for two exam cycles. The current curriculum will be tested during the December 2020 exam and on any exams in 2021.

Marg Franklin and Randi Tolber held a virtual town hall earlier this month to offer an update on CFA Institute's strategic planning process and discuss the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. A recording of the event is available here.

The team from the University of Sydney Business School won the 2020 CFA Institute Research Challenge. This year's event was the first in history to embrace an all-virtual format, both for the regional finals and the global finals. The official announcement is available here.
