ACI Summer Update August 2016
Children benefiting from ACI filters in rural Nicaragua

Aqua Clara  has been busy in the lab and around the world as always. Below you can read an update on where we have been lately and what we have been up to! Thanks for being part of the ACI family. We could not do this work without your help.

Nicaragua - Water Supervisions with AMOS

For five weeks beginning in June, ACI's interns, Andrew Neevel and Clara Schriemer worked with our partner organization, AMOS Health and Hope in Nicaragua to supervise ACI biosand and hollow membrane filters. They visited three different rural communities, spending a week in each. They led groups of AMOS volunteers in home visits, sometimes hiking hours to locate five or six remote homes. Filters were already installed in all three communities, so the filter teams checked in with families, offered support, and performed maintenance if necessary. Filter supervisions proceed more like a conversation than a list of questions, while identifying opportunities for improvement. Sometimes the filter itself needs fixing, but the filter owners often needed refreshers on proper use. In addition to the filter supervisions, filter groups took advantage of the home visit to educate community members about Zika. The vast majority were familiar with Dengue and Chikungunya, but had not yet heard of Zika. All of the conversations were of course held in Spanish.

The experiences Clara and Andrew had in the field will no doubt shape their work in research and development back in the lab and for their future endeavors. They really enjoyed the trip and are grateful for your continued support.

Tegucigalpa, Honduras - International Congress of Mining & Geology

Aqua Clara International was invited to the 2nd annual International Congress of Mining and Geology in Honduras on July 13-15. ACI was invited due to the high need for arsenic remediation where arsenic is present naturally and due to mining practices throughout Central America. ACI's Program Field Director of Latin America, Jay VandenBrink, our Nicaraguan Program Director, Mario Benavides, and PhD candidate of UAQ Mexico, Marcela Duhne, were all in attendance. The days before the congress were used for preparation and two very important meetings. One meeting was with the Director of Education of Honduras, and the other with several Honduran engineers, which was held at UPI (Universidad  Politécnica de Ingeniería), the only engineering university of Honduras.

ACI was one of eight groups that were able to talk to the whole congress. People were very interested in our technology and thanked us for what we do. This congress was heavily involved with UPI and ACI plans to create partnerships with such to help bring clean heavy-metal-free water to the people of Honduras.

ACI Laboratory - Continuation of Fluoride Research

Alex TenPas working in the MSU chemistry lab located above the ACI lab in the MSU Bioeconomy building in Holland, MI, USA
Aqua Clara has had the privilege of having three interns work in our MSU laboratory this summer. Currently, they are researching the best methods of fluoride remediation. We have been excited about promising data, but still hard at work trying to figure out the best way to take fluoride out of drinking water which poisons millions of people throughout the world.

Alex TenPas has been working with us all summer and will be going into his freshman year at Michigan Tech University. He plans to study Chemical Engineering. Clara Schriemer and Andrew Neevel are both taking a gap year before further studies and recently graduated from Hope College, Holland, MI. We appreciate their help in the lab and in the field as they share the passion of bringing clean water to the most susceptible people of the world.
