A Word From Our Editor, Grace Sylke
|
If you don't read anything else in this Newsletter, PLEASE read our "What's Coming in 2017" Section. Because besides telling you about the Greenhouse and Growroom we're about to build, we are also sharing an important warning regarding our economy and the crash in early 2017 that is being predicted by many economists (who don't work for the Government or the main stream media).
We felt it was important to share this warning for many reasons, one being that the price of food will go sky high.
We really don't like being the bearers of bad news; but sometimes you just have to tell the truth and pray that people listen, do their own research and PREPARE!
Thank you for following our Newsletters this year. We hope to see you again in 2017. Have a joyful Christmas and Happy New Year. |

Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Monsanto's Roundup. The molecular structures of DDT and Glyphosate are very different and they're not even given the same designation--one is a Herbicide, the other a Pesticide. But these two killers are both responsible for killing way more than their intended targets and they have a whole lot in common. This Newsletter covers that story.
What first comes to mind when we look at the designators for DDT and Glyphosate, which are Pesticide and Herbicide, is the common suffix, "cide". "Cide" from French and Latin ("Cida") means "cutter, killer". Quite quickly, the word "suicide" comes to mind, and, there you have it, because our continued use of environmental toxins is just that--MASS SUICIDE!
|
|
Prior to the early 70's, we were just plain ignorant of the detrimental effects of Pesticides so . . .
We were so completely ignorant of the dangers of DDT that we openly sprayed neighborhoods, beaches, parks and other public places that were teeming with Americans living their happy and prosperous post World War II lives.
Get this. Children would actually listen for the DDT spraying trucks to come up the block. Upon hearing that familiar swooshing sound, they would rush outside to play in the fun DDT-filled fog and chase the truck as it rolled down the street. This popular activity, enjoyed by many American children, was almost as exciting as chasing down the ice-cream truck or waiting for the ubiquitous milk man to get a taste of the cream on top of the bottles of milk left at the door. It was Americana and, unbeknown to us all, it was SUICIDE by PESTICIDE!
|
Then came the Book that woke us all up out of the DDT fog!
And, thankfully, we have banned the use of DDT after touting it as a bane for agriculture after World War II when it was used "to control malaria and typhus among civilians and troops". "First synthesized in 1874, DDT's insecticidal action was discovered by the Swiss chemist Paul Hermann Müller in 1939. Müller was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 'for his discovery of the high efficiency of DDT as a contact poison against several arthropods' in 1948."
Fourteen years later, Rachel Carson's book,
Silent Spring, was published. It cataloged many circumstantial environmental impacts that coincided with widespread DDT spraying in the United States and questioned the logic of releasing large amounts of potentially dangerous chemicals into the environment without understanding their effects on the environment or human health. The book claimed that DDT and other pesticides had been shown to cause cancer and that their agricultural use was a threat to wildlife, particularly birds. Its publication was a seminal event for the environmental movement and resulted in a large public outcry that eventually led, in 1972, to a ban on DDT's agricultural use in the United States." God Bless, Rachel Carson.

|
So here we are right back where we were in the 50's.
We are openly spraying Roundup, the popular weed killer by Monsanto, EVERYWHERE! We spray it on our lawns, our gardens, our public parks and our largest crops like corn, soy and canola. Notice the shadowy figure on the bottle's "Comfort WAND" Logo isn't even wearing protective gear because Monsanto has us believing that Roundup is as safe as mother's milk (which isn't so safe these days). We discuss the issue of mother's milk below.
Not so fast! Roundup is where Glyphosate is hiding. In fact, Glyphosate is the "active ingredient" in Roundup, meaning it's the ingredient that makes Roundup the "Killer" it is purported to be.
Remember, Roundup is called a Herbicide and DDT is called a Pesticide. So what is the difference between a Herbicide and a Pesticide? The word, Pesticide is a broad-based descriptor that "encompasses all kinds of chemicals, biological agents, or disinfectants that get rid of pests. Pests "can be in any form of organism; they can be insects, weeds, plants, mammals, birds, fish, fungi, microorganisms, and many more. They are considered pests, because they may compete with humans for food, spread diseases, or destroy property. We use pesticides to eliminate them, in order to make our lives less troublesome."
But something confusing has happened to the word Pesticide as it "is commonly used interchangeably with [the word] insecticide, but it is not always the case. Insecticide is merely a type of pesticide designed to specifically kill insects." In the same way, the word Herbicide "is just a category of pesticide, along with fungicides, rodenticides, nematicides, and algicides." Herbicides are designed to kill a ubiquitous pest called weeds. So to be more exact, DDT is an Insecticide and Glyphosate is a Herbicide, and they are both Pesticides. So that's the first way they are the same--they are both Pesticides. (Quotes in this section taken from the DifferenceBetween.net website article entitled "Difference Between Herbicides and Pesticides")

I'm BACK!
In 1985 "an Environmental Protection Agency committee determined that the popular weed killer Roundup might cause cancer. Six years later, in 1991, the agency reversed itself after re-evaluating the mouse study that had been the basis for the original conclusion."
"Now the issue is back again, in an even bigger way. [In March, 2015] An agency of the World Health Organization has declared that glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, 'probably' causes cancer in people. One piece of evidence the agency cites is that same mouse study." And, of course Monsanto is crying foul and claiming the World Health Organization (WHO) has an agenda and is "cherry picking the data to support its case".
"The new controversy and the reversal by the E.P.A. decades ago demonstrate how the same data can be interpreted differently and how complicated and politically perilous such a decision can be. But the discrepancy between Monsanto and the health organization [WHO] can be partly explained by the specific way its agency analyzes the data."
"Officials at the agency, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, said they had no agenda other than to inform the World Health Organization. They said the conclusion was based on studies of people, laboratory animals and cells."
" 'All three lines of evidence sort of said the same thing, which is we ought to be concerned about this,' said Aaron Blair, a retired epidemiologist from the National Cancer Institute who was chairman of the group of 17 reviewers from around the world; agreement on the classification was unanimous." (Quotes in the above five paragraphs have been taken from The New York Times online article entitled "
Weed Killer, Long Cleared, Is Doubted")
These independent Cancer Researchers came to a UNANIMOUS agreement that Glyphosate "probably" causes cancer. This agreement came one year after scientists at the same agency found a "strong link between pesticide exposure and a blood cancer called non-Hodgkin lymphoma". "Analyzing 44 individual research projects published since 1980, the scientists, writing in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, said that people exposed to the weed killer glyphosate, marketed by Monsanto under the brand name Roundup, had double the risk of developing non-Hodgkin's lymphoma." (Quotes in this paragraph are from the EWG, AgMag article dated May 23, 2014 and entitled "
Study: Glyphosae Doubles Risk of Lymphoma")
So let's see, the WHO declared Glyphosate a "probable" carcinogen in March of 2015. Since then, nearly thirty EU countries have banned it. So what is happening in the U.S. to protect Americans from this scourge? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! No EPA Regulations! No labels! No outrage! No Nothing! In fact, due to the loss of revenue in Europe as a result of the bans, Monsanto is doubling down in the U.S. and is applying for more patents for their genetically modified crops that can eat up Round Up's Glyphosate like candy while not appearing to be affected. Maybe we should change the name of the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) to the MPA (Monsanto Protection Agency). That certainly would be a more accurate description.
Since this is a story about how DDT, which finally was banned in the U.S., and Glyphosate are similar, we need to take a look at what finally took DDT down.
|
It took years for all of the accusations against DDT to add up to a ban.
We've already discussed Rachel Carson's famous book, Silent Spring. But what ultimately contributed to taking out DDT was the massive die off of our nation's symbolic bird, the Eagle, and the finding of DDT in breast milk as well as cow's milk in the U.S. " 'Although environmental contaminants may have potential for entering breast milk, pesticides are among the groups with greatest concern,' states one author in Clinical Nutrition. Pesticides such as chlordane, heptachlor, DDT, DDE and other organohalogen compounds do not biodegrade in the environment. Instead they bioconcentrate and are stored in the fat of human beings, who feed at the top of the food chain. The infant feeding on its mother's milk is even higher on this chain."
"In the 1960s, many articles signaled the presence of pesticides in human milk. However, surveys as early as 1948, 1949, and 1951 had already found traces of DDT in one-quarter of market samples of cow's milk in the U.S . In 1978, reports indicated that during the previous years of that decade, 96 percent of commercial milk samples in Illinois had dieldrin residues, 93 percent had heptachlor epoxide, 73 percent had lindane, 69 percent had chlordane, and 48 percent had DDT residues."
"Because cow's milk had become contaminated with widely used insecticides, it should have been of considerable interest to explore the state of human milk. But the first evaluation of human milk for insecticide contamination did not occur until 1951 when 32 non-occupationally exposed black women were surveyed in Washington, D.C., 30 of whom had detectable levers of DDT with à mean value of 0.13 ppm."
"More than a decade passed before another paper was published in the U.S. on the results of a small survey taken in California noting both DDT (0-0.12 ppm) and DDE (0-0.25 ppm) in human milk." (Quotes in the above four paragraphs have been taken from the EAP McGill website section called Magazine Rack's article entitled "
Mother's Milk or Mother's Poison? Pesticides in Breast Milk")
Then it became known that DDT and its buddies DDE and DDD, which occur when DDT breaks down, "last in the soil for a very long time, potentially for hundreds of years. Most DDT breaks down slowly into DDE and DDD, generally by the action of microorganisms. These chemicals may also evaporate into the air and be deposited in other places. They stick strongly to soil, and therefore generally remain in the surface layers of soil. Some soil particles with attached DDT, DDE, or DDD may get into rivers and lakes in runoff." (Quote in this paragraph taken from ATSDR (Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry) Toxic Substances Portal Public Health Statement entitled "
Public Health Statement for DDT, DDE and DDD" dated September 2002)
A final nail in DDT's coffin was the finding of DDT in our food supply. DDT is part of a group of toxins that are called POPS (Persistent Organic Pollutants). A study conducted in 1998 and 1999, which was 26 years after DDT had been banned found "that POPs residues are present in virtually all categories of foods, including baked goods, fruit, vegetables, meat, poultry, and dairy products. Residues of five or more persistent toxic chemicals in a single food item were not unusual, with the most commonly found POPs being DDT and its metabolites [DDE and DDD] (found in 21% of samples tested in 1998 and 22% in 1999)." (Quote in this paragraph taken from the Journal of Epidemiology & Commnity Health article entitled "
Persistent toxic chemicals in the US food supply")
Crazy as it may seem, it wasn't until June of 2015, that the International Agency for Research on Cancer met to assess the carcinogenicity of insecticides of which DDT was one. This team of scientist determined that DDT was "probably carcinogenic to humans" and placed it in (Group 2A) right along with Glyphosate!
To summarize, DDT's demise came as a result of the following discoveries over several years:
1. It was shown that DDT was causing the die-off of Eagles
2. It was shown that DDT was a bioconcentrate that was accumulating in cow and breast milk
3. It was shown that DDT lasts in the soil for potentially hundreds of years
4. It was shown that DDT evaporates into the air and travels to distant places where it's deposited
5. It was shown that DDT was in our food supply
6. It was shown that DDT was "probably" carcinogenic by the International Agency for Research on Cancer

So what similar accusations are clobbering Glyphosate these days?
This list of studies and anecdotal testimonies are showing Glyphosate to be as destructive a toxin as DDT, which is quite amazing!
A. Glyphosate is a Killer
In the case of DDT, it was our American Eagles that were being threatened. In the case of Glyphosate, which just like DDT is a Pesticide, it's our precious Honeybees. "A recent study [published in the Journal of Experimental Biology] has uncovered a link between the world's most widely used Herbicide, Round Up, and the dramatic decline in honeybee populations in North America and Europe."
What the researchers found "was that concentrations of glyphosate (GLY) produced 'a reduced sensitivity to sucrose and learning performance for the groups chronically exposed to GLY concentrations within the range of recommended dose', negatively impacting the honeybee's sensitivity to nectar reward and impaired their learning abilities - are two behavioural consequences likely to adversely affect their survival abilities."
"In addition they noted a significant decrease in elemental learning, non-elemental associative learning, and short-term memory retention, when exposed to higher doses of glyphosate."
In a separate study "plant pathologist Dr. Don Huber submitted a paper to the Center for Honeybee Research highlighting glyphosate as a possible cause of CCD (Colony Collapse Disorder)"
Huber's research found that glyphosate can cause the following disruptions to Honeybee life:
"1. Chelates minerals, lowering available nutrients in plants. Malnutrition is a consistent factor in CCD.
2. Acts like an antibiotic to beneficial bacteria. This means it kills off Lactobacillus and other bacteria necessary for digestion.
3. Is a neurotoxin. A common symptom of CCD is that honeybees experience neurological changes associated with disorientation.
4. Causes endocrine hormone & immune disruption. Alterations in key hormones and immune system function can be lethal.
5 Stimulates fungal overgrowth. This could encourage the growth of the fungal pathogen Nosema.
6. Is a persistent, accumulative poison. Residues present in honey, nectar and other plant products, mean honeybees are continually exposed to this toxin." (Quotes in this section have been taken from a Natural Health News website article entitled "I
s Roundup killing our honeybees?")
B. Glyphosate is in breast milk!
"In the first ever testing on glyphosate herbicide in the breast milk of American women, Moms Across America and Sustainable Pulse have found 'high' levels in 3 out of the 10 samples tested. The shocking results point to glyphosate levels building up in women's bodies over a period of time, which has until now been refuted by both global regulatory authorities and the biotech industry.
"
"1. Pilot study shows build-up of glyphosate herbicide in Mothers' bodies
2. Urine testing shows glyphosate levels over 10 times higher than in Europe
3. Initial testing shows Monsanto and Global regulatory bodies are wrong regarding bio-accumulation of glyphosate, leading to serious public health concerns
4. Testing commissioners urge USDA and EPA to place temporary ban on all use of Glyphosate-based herbicides to protect public health, until further more comprehensive testing of glyphosate in breast milk is completed." (Quote taken from a Sustainable Pulse article entitled "
World's Number 1 Herbicide Discovered in U.S. Mothers' Breast Milk")
This study was done in early 2014, and you can bet that since then Monsanto and friends have refuted it, called the science inaccurate and done everything possible to make it go away including running their own test out of Washington State University that concluded "American breast milk to be glyphosate free". In answer to the bogus Monsanto study, the Moms Across America website published an article in July of 2015, explaining that the Washington State University study by Michelle McGuire was actually done in a Monsanto lab and funded by both Monsanto and the supposedly verifying lab, Covance Laboratories. How stupid do they think we are?
C. Glyphosate is in the soil
The following are some anecdotal findings regarding the affects of Glyphosate on soil. These finding are far and few between as very few independent studies have been conducted.
1. There is a rise of what farmers are calling "superweeds". These weeds have become resistant to Glyphosate. To fight them farmers need to use more Glyphosate.
2. The soil becomes hard and compact making it more difficult and expensive to harvest crops.
3. Glyphosate affects the root zone, which, in turn, affects the plant's health.
4. Because it binds tightly to minerals in the soil, Glyphosate competes with the plant for nutrients.
(Data points taken from a New York Times online article entitled "
Misgivings About How a Weed Killer Affects the Soil")
D. Glyphosate is in the Atmosphere
A U.S. Geological Survey has concluded that pesticides can be found in anything and everything throughout the U.S.
"1. Roundup herbicide, Monsanto's flagship weed killer, was present in 75 percent of air and rainfall test samples, according to the study, which focused on Mississippi's highly fertile Delta agricultural region.
2. GreenMedInfo reports new research, soon to be published by Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry journal, discovered the traces over a 12-year span from 1995-2007.
3. In recent years, Roundup was found to be even more toxic than it was when first approved for agricultural use, though that discovery has not led to any changes in regulation of the pesticide. Moreover, Roundup's overuse has enabled weeds and insects to build an immunity to its harsh toxin." (Quote taken from the EcoWatch website article entitled "
Monsanto's Roundup Found in 75% of Air and Rain Samples")
4. "Aerial drift of the herbicide will cause injury to nontarget plants. The likelihood of drift injury occurring is greatest when winds are gusty or when wind velocities will allow spray drift to occur. Minute quantities of mist, drip, drift or splash of glyphosate onto nontarget vegetation can cause severe damage or destruction to the plants or other areas on which treatment was not intended."
(Quote taken from a pdf by Jeff Schuette of the Environmental Monitoring & Pest Management Department of Pesticide Regulation entitled "
Environmental Fate of Glyphosate")
E. Glyphosate is in our Food Supply
"A FDA-registered food safety laboratory tested iconic American food for residues of the weed killer glyphosate (aka Monsanto's Roundup) and found ALARMING amounts. According to independent research probable harm to human health begins at really low levels of exposure, 0.1 ppb of glyphosate. Many foods were found to have over 1,000 times this amount!" Here are the shocking results:
If this isn't enough to make you want to start cooking from scratch, nothing will. Recently, the Breitbart.com website started a Boycott Kellogg's campaign because of the CEO's extreme left- leaning politics. Politics aside, the best reason to boycott Kellogg's, General Mills, Nabisco, Campbell Soup Company, Little Debbie, Lucy's, Whole Foods and Back to Nature is because
Glyphosate is saturating several of their brands!
So, here it is, the answer to the question, How Are DDT and Glyphosate the Same?
1. They are both Pesticides
2. They are both threatening living organisms. DDT killed Eagles. Glyphosate is the number one suspected killer of honeybees.
3. They are both bioconcentrates that don't break down but accumulate in human breast milk
4. They are both affecting the soil
5. They are both affecting the atmosphere
6. They are both in our food supply
7. They have both been declared "probable" carcinogenics by the International Agency for Research on Cancer
Need we say more. Given these glaring similarities, we believe it's only a matter of time before Glyphosate is banned just like DDT. (Quotes and images from the Food Babe website article entitled "
Monsanto Is Scrambling To Bury This Breaking Story--Don't Let This Go Unshared!")

The next time you get a headache and reach for an Aspirin, think again!
Because Bayer just swallowed Monsanto for a whopping $66 billion.
"Announced Wednesday [September 14, 2016], the bid that sealed the deal is for $128 per Monsanto (MON) share, valuing the U.S. company's equity at about $56 billion. Bayer will also be taking on about $10 billion in debt."
"The big obstacle the companies now face is getting the merger past regulators around the globe."
"Monsanto shares in the U.S. were flat in premarket trading at around $106. That's way below the offer price, suggesting investors doubt the deal will go through."
"If regulators do kill the transaction, Bayer has agreed to pay $2 billion to Monsanto. Bayer, which is strongest in Asia and Europe, stands to gain from Monsanto's expertise in agriculture and seeds. It would also benefit from the U.S. company's big presence in North America. Bayer has said combining the companies would generate synergies of $1.5 billion over three years. The deal is the latest mega-merger aimed at reshaping the agribusiness and chemical sectors."
As if we needed bigger agribusinesses and chemical sectors. Get ready to boycott Bayer if this deal goes through, which is estimated to take until late 2017. Oh, hell, start Boycotting Bayer right now just for wanting to take over Monsanto. (Quotes in this section have been taken from the CNN Money website article entitled "Bayer is buying Monsanto in $66 billion deal")

Wonders Never Cease! The Holidays are Here again!
It's truly unbelievable that this is our December 2016 Issue. We have to say that this year went even faster than 2015. In fact, since we passed 2000, all the years have been flying by.
So since this is our December 2016 Issue, that means that according to a tradition we've established, we're going to List this issue in our sidebar along with our December 2014 and December 2015 Issues in January 2017. That way, you'll always be able to access all of our Newsletters from every Newsletter.
We wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year. We so appreciate your following our News- letters, which we're writing especially for you, Our Readers, in an attempt to help you navigate the shark infested waters of Big Food, Big Chemical and Big Agricultural Giants like the ones we just talked about above.

What's Coming in 2017!
Above is the covering for our new Greenhouse; and we'll be building it soon right along with our Fishroom. We'll be blogging and Newsletter writing about every step of the way. We're living 6,000 ft. up in the White Mountains of Arizona where we recently re-located so we've added a whole new dimension to Aquaponics food growing challenges because it's really cold up here in the winter.
Our Greenhouse will be climate controlled and heated in a very creative way. As you can see from the above picture, this isn't ordinary Greenhouse covering. It's a product from Germany and is so strong it can hold a gang of men jumping on it without taring.
Here's the 15' by 75' area that will be our Fishroom and Greenhouse. The Fishroom will be in what is now the enclosed covered area, and the Greenhouse will be in the open, sunny area except it will be even more open as we have to remove the existing roof. We'll leave the rafters to support the covering.
We're saving up our money to move forward with this project and have already spent nearly $2,000 on the covering alone. We can't wait to share our progress to completion of this new Aquaponics USA Greenhouse. So stay tuned.

As 2017 quickly approaches,
growing food becomes more important than ever. The word is out in a big way, albeit not in the lame stream news and certainly not from our government, that a worldwide economic crash is rushing at us like a runaway train.
Neither Trump nor Hillary or any political leader can save us from this crash. We have destroyed our currency right along with the rest of the world by printing money out of thin air--money not backed by anything. There was a time prior to 1971 when our dollar was backed by gold; but that changed, and we decided to peg our dollar to oil. The U.S. dollar has been the world's reserve currency for the last 70 years. That means that other countries stock pile dollars so they can conduct international trade and purchase oil. We are about to lose our status as the world's reserve currency; and that will be devastating to our still sluggish economy.
We feel it's important to give our readers this warning before the end of 2016 because this crash is projected to arrive in early 2017, and we would have failed all of you if we didn't warn you. But don't take our word for it. Read what these economists are saying below.
What is being shared is we're going to be dealing with a devalued dollar, Deflation and Hyper-Inflation all at the same time. Property and large-ticket items like cars may be deflating due to lack of buyers while basic needs LIKE FOOD will inflate and maybe even become less plentiful as our just in time delivery system breaks down due to a prolonged credit freeze and lack of liquidity. Please read the articles Linked above about this dire prediction of what's headed our way in the very near future and PREPARE.
Thank You for following our Newsletters. We so appreciate your interest in our two cutting edge Aquaponics Companies, Aquaponics USA and Aquaponics Wold, LLC. We'll continue to bring you important information about Aquaponics, our Food and our U.S. Food System, which, right now, is broken and has turned us into subjects of the Big Food Sharks and the Biotechs.
