Issue 2 - November 2024

Club News and Announcements

Dear Members, Residents, and Fellow Golf Enthusiasts of all ages,

It gives me great pleasure to share our 2nd edition of Breaking Par. On that note, I played 9 holes with the Dougherty Group last week, and I couldn't break a sweat, much less break par! So, any words of wisdom come more from an historical perspective. It's unimaginable how the game can seem so easy at one stage, especially twenty years ago (which I'm sure many of us can relate to) and seem so foreign and difficult today. That's golf!

As y'all know by now (hopefully), membership packets were sent out a while back, and renewal memberships are due by December 15th, 2024. Please encourage any new neighbors or friends in the area to consider golf and/or tennis membership here at Aquarina or simply ask them to come speak with me.

In closing, as this is officially the November newsletter, let's all take stock of the countless things we have to be thankful for especially given the recent storms, not only as citizens of this great country, but as neighbors of this fine community. Let me be the first to wish you all a very healthy, happy, and safe Thanksgiving.

Best Regards,

Ed

This Month's Golf Group Spotlight

The AWGC Ladies League is Aquarina's formal ladies league and is an "AWGC Member Only" league that plays every Wednesday morning at 9am. In order to join the group, you simply need to do two things; join the AWGC Ladies League at an annual cost of $30 and carry a USGA GHIN handicap. However, you are not required to be an Aquarina Golf Club Member in order to play in AWGC events. If you are new to the game and don't have a GHIN, please inquire within the Pro Shop and we can get you registered for an additional $30 annual GHIN membership. The AWGC not only plays weekly on Wednesday mornings, but they also hold three annual AWGC Member scrambles that usually attract at least 50-60 ladies for a fun scramble format followed by lunch. The next scramble is scheduled for December 4th at 9am. The sign-up sheet for this event will be posted in early November. The weekly play costs $3.00 per person for the weekly prize fund. The scrambles are typically $5.00 per person for the prize fund plus the cost of lunch (and the cost of golf if you are not an Aquarina Golf Club Member). Have questions? Please reach out to Ed at (321) 989 9463 or golf@aquarinacc.com.

Course Conditions and Updates

While not without it's challenges, stemming from drought conditions to hurricanes and flooding conditions and everything in between, the course remains in reasonably good shape. Having said that, many things still need attention. Ron's crew will need to aerate the greens in the coming weeks, unusual for this time of year, but necessary. They will also aggressively be treating the weeds in the fairways and on the tee boxes, thanks in part to the amount of recent rain. Additionally, we've had a lot of "critter" activity on some of the greens, particularly green #4. We've narrowed the culprits down to either a ravenous rabid raccoon or a cute cuddly chipmunk (or perhaps wild pigs, or birds, or armadillos), or maybe the Caddie Shack Gopher - LOL! In any event, his ass is grass when we find him! Seriously though, they've done a fair amount of damage that will likely require plugging (like we did on the practice green recently). While the greens don't look particularly good right now, due to the contamination, they are putting reasonably well and fairly fast. Finally, another heartfelt thank you to the many volunteers, residents, members, and staff, who helped with the clean-up efforts following Hurricanes Helene and Milton. We couldn't do it without you!

Secrets of a Good Golf Swing

Every golfer has different abilities and skill sets that can further their game. While players have different handicaps and different club preferences, a very important aspect for every player is their swing. A good golf swing combines technique, balance, and timing. Here are some key secrets to mastering it.

  1. Grip: Ensure you have the right grip pressure—firm but not tense. Your grip should feel natural and comfortable and should never be too tight. Grip the club and hold it perpendicular to the ground which should feel very light. Then, hold it parallel to the ground which should feel very heavy. The ideal grip pressure should be somewhere in between.
  2. Stance: Position your feet shoulder-width apart, with your weight evenly distributed or slightly forward. Align your body parallel to the target line with your feet, hips, and shoulders all pointing towards your target.
  3. Posture: Bend slightly at the hips, keeping your back straight. Your knees should be slightly flexed, not locked, in a sportsman like stance.
  4. Takeaway: Start your swing with a smooth, controlled takeaway. Keep the clubhead low to the ground and move it away from your body. Think of turning your left shoulder under your chin.
  5. Backswing: Rotate your shoulders and hips while keeping your left arm straight. Aim for a full turn, with your weight shifting naturally to your back foot.
  6. Transition: As you begin your downswing, shift your weight to your front foot leaning into your forward knee, and pushing it down and somewhat towards the target. This transition is crucial for generating power.
  7. Downswing: Focus on your hips leading the motion. Your arms and hands should follow, creating a natural sequence.
  8. Impact: Aim to hit the ball with a square clubface. Your body should be in a balanced position, with your weight shifting to your front foot. For irons and fairway woods, you want a descending blow, making contact with the ball first, then the ground in front of your ball (target side). With your driver, you should have an ascending blow, hitting the ball on the up-arc.
  9. Follow-through: A good follow-through is key to a solid swing. Continue your motion after impact, allowing your body to rotate fully.
  10. Practice: Consistency comes with practice. Work on these elements regularly, and consider recording your swings to analyze your technique.

Remember, every golfer is different, so find what works best for you!
