Ojibwe Classroom Expert ~ Sammi DeFoe

Boozhoo! (Hello) from Sammi DeFoe, the Ojibwe culture/language specialist teaching fourth and fifth graders this year at Aquila. Her lessons so far have included who the Ojibwe are and where they come from. She has reviewed the Sandy Lake Tragedy, the Seven Grandfather Teachings and the animals that represent them, and shared many artifacts of hers that represent Ojibwe culture. Future plans include the significance of the Medicine Wheel, dream catchers, and language activities.

Sammi is a member of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe. She has three sons - Calvin (12th grade), Duncan (11th grade), and Bryton (6th grade) who all attend SLP schools. Her whole family, minus a handful of them, all reside on the reservation in Red Cliff, Wisconsin. She is a descendant of Chief Buffalo who was a prominent leader of the Ojibwe people that fought to keep their homes on reservations throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota.

When Sammi is not at Aquila, she makes beaded fringe earrings and spends time with family and friends. Her summers are always filled with trips back home to visit and boat round the Apostle Islands with her boys and brother and sister-in-law. Her favorite foods include Lake Superior whitefish, wild rice tater tot hotdish and fry bread. You might also find her enjoying the Nacho's Mexican Grill in Hopkins.

Her favorite part about her job is seeing the enthusiasm and eagerness to learn in the kids' spirits! Their eyes light up and they are excited to learn more when she walks into their classrooms. In her culture, they talk about the circle of life. She has made acomplete circle being that when she was about their age she always said she was going to be a teacher, but life took her on a different path and here she is teaching them about who she is, who her people are, and spreading awareness that “We are still here!”

Aquila's Tool Of The Week ~ Prone Breathing

Each week, students and staff will focus on a tool that helps them with their social emotional well-being. This week's tool is Prone Breathing.

  • Lie on your stomach.
  • Feel your belly press into the floor when you breathe in, and pull away from the floor when you breathe out.
  • Notice your back rise when you breathe in and fall when you breathe out.
  • Breathe slowly for 3-5 breaths.

Whole School Read ~ Just Help!

Each classroom enjoyed reading the book Just Help written by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and illustrated by Angela Dominguez

In the story, a young Sonia explains to her family how she and her fellow friends have helped her community. Each act of kindness has long lasting effects.

Our hope is that this book and examples of how Aquila students have helped raise money in the past for Aquila Give$ (begins on Sunday, November 6) give students a better understanding of the idea of civic engagement and the importance of working collectively towards a greater good such as a school wide fundraiser like Aquila Give$.

Students who wish to get creative and raise funds for Aquila Gives in addition to the traditional direct donation path on GoFundMe are welcome to do so. Hot cocoa stands, lemonade stands, and making and selling homemade crafts like friendship bracelets are all ideas students have brought to life in the past. What ideas do your students have?

If your creative fundraiser has an idea, but could use help with resources to make it happen,

please email [email protected]

no later than Tuesday, November 1, 2022.

The Aquila Gives committee will make every effort to help with the purchase of supplies to support these fundraising efforts.

Be on the look out for this Aquila Give$ informational flyer.

Last year, Sloane ran a hot cocoa stand in front of her house and collected donations for Aquila Give$. She was able to donate $50 to the fundraiser!

Operation Recess ~ Pros of the Rope

Another week of Operation Recess found our second and third graders enjoying long single jump rope activities! With a goal to 'jump in' up to four or even five jumpers, these students rose to the challenge! Third graders, Sahra, Neema, and Ana got into the groove, and second graders Sharmilla and Iyana were recognized by Coach Jonny for their hard work! Operation Recess is sponsored by the Aquila PTO with funds raised during Aquila Gives and is also supported by SLP Family Services Collaborative.

Volunteer Opportunity ~ Lunchroom help

Please consider helping out in the Aquila Cafeteria. We are looking for parents and guardians to help keep tables clean and engage with students.

Child Tax Credit Information

Families with no income or low income could get at least $3,000 per child with the Child Tax Credit, plus $1,400 with the third stimulus payment - even if you have never filed taxes before and if you have not filed taxes this year.

Deadline is November 15, 2022: Tax documents are not required. If you want to claim additional money with the EITC, you will need your W-2(s) from your employer. Fill out this easy form on your computer or cell phone mobile in 15 minutes or less: getctc.org

More than 33,000 children in Minnesota could miss out on this money if their parent/guardian has not filed.
