Greetings Aquila Community,

There's a lot of great learning happening here at Aquila! As we look at our students' data, we are seeing the results of students' hard work and teachers' collaboration. Please look for information in classroom newsletters around the Minnesota standards that students are working on and check in with your student to celebrate the work that they're doing.

Paz,

María & Olivia

Aquila Health Office Reminders

As we head into cold and flu season, we’ve noticed an uptake in illnesses commonly seen in the school setting including colds, covid/flu, strep throat, and stomach bugs. In addition, the Aquila Health office has been made aware of several confirmed cases of Pneumonia over the last few weeks. CDC/MDH have confirmed they have seen an increase in pneumonia this fall. https://www.cdc.gov/ncird/whats-new/mycoplasma-pneumoniae-infections-have-been-increasing.html

Pneumonia often begins with common cold symptoms followed by fever, fatigue, and a persistent cough. Treatment for pneumonia often includes antibiotics. Please notify the health office of any positive diagnoses.

To help prevent the spread of these illnesses, wash hands frequently, do not touch eyes, nose or mouth, cover mouth and nose with elbow when sneezing or coughing, disinfect commonly touched surfaces and stay home for the following reasons:

  • Illness-Unable to participate in school activities, unusually tired
  • Fever - 100.0 degrees or above
  • Vomiting/diarrhea: more than twice in a 24 hour period.
  • Any uncontrolled cough, respiratory virus symptoms that are worsening and not due to an underlying cause such as seasonal allergies
  • Rash with a fever

The district has added information about head lice to the health services website. https://www.slpschools.org/about/departments/health-services

As a reminder: lice is common in childhood, so it is important to check your children’s hair for head lice on a regular basis!

In good health,

Aquila Health Office

Cold Weather Reminder

Students will always go outside unless the regular temperature is below 0 degrees or the windchill temperature is -10 degrees or below. We will watch the temperature to keep our students safe.

We are always in need of gently used or new winter gear, especially waterproof mittens/gloves.

If you are in need of winter gear, please contact our Social Worker Janaki Vivekananda at vivekananda.janaki@slpschools.org
