Greetings from the Arboretum!
It's April! The weather has turned and spring migration has begun in New Jersey. Black-necked Stilts have been seen in Cape May County. Warblers like the Orange-crowned Warbler have been spotted in backyards in Essex County. Brown Thrashers have been heard in parks in Middlesex County.
It's time to go out and start birding with all your new birding skills. Give your binoculars a good cleaning, make sure your phone is fully charged, review the bird lists of your chosen birding location, and then go! The best way to practice birding is by going birding in a place that welcomes birds. Visit woodlands, marshes, ponds, and beaches. It may seem like a no-brainer, but it is always important to remember that visiting a variety of habitats means more opportunities to see a variety of birds.
In celebration of these migrating birds, Beak Week is on the horizon! This fun and friendly spring birdathon and fundraiser is a weeklong competition where participants of all ages and skill levels are invited to form teams and collect pledges and donations for identifying bird species throughout New Jersey. Join us on a birding adventure and community celebration of nature and conservation! There is still plenty of time to form a team and get registered before the excitement officially begins on April 17th.
Additionally, Draw a Bird Day is next week! As part of the Beak Week celebration, over 100 students from Millburn Township elementary schools submitted drawings of birds to be displayed at CHA. These drawings will be on exhibit in the Stone House from Draw a Bird Day on April 8th until the end of Beak Week on April 24th. You can see this children's art exhibit during a visit to the Arboretum, or during one of our upcoming April events! We hope to see you for a visit soon.
Sincerely,
CHA staff
