Last week, we celebrated Catholic Schools Week with a mix of prayer, service, and fun. Fr. Eric Sundrup S.J., pastor of Bellarmine Chapel on the campus of Xavier University, presided at our all-school Mass on Thursday. Reflecting on the Gospel reading of Mark 4: 21-25 during his homily, Fr. Sundrup challenged us "to be a lamp on a stand shining with confident vulnerability." When I arrived here, I asked members of the school community, "What makes McNick McNick?" Many mentioned "humble confidence," another way of saying "confident vulnerability." What a wonderful characteristic!
Here is a civic opportunity to be a lamp on a stand shining with confident vulnerability: Early this week we informed parents via email that the Ohio Legislature on Friday night, January 31, passed legislation delaying the opening of the window for 2020-21 EdChoice Scholarship applications from the original date of February 1 to April 1. The legislation also reduced the number of families who had been eligible for EdChoice Scholarships based on legislation in place until Friday night. The Ohio Department of Education provided this summary of the legislation. The Catholic Conference of Ohio provided this response to the new legislation. Families and schools, including McNicholas, have made decisions for the 2020-21 school year relying on the legislation that had been in place prior to January 31. Here is a directory of Ohio legislators whom you might want to contact about this issue.

2020-21 Registration for Current Families
Registration for current students is underway. Packets with scholarship and financial aid award notification will be mailed by February 10, 2020. Completed enrollment contracts and a registration fee of $850 must be received by Friday, March 6, 2020.
FACTS Tuition Management will manage our tuition collection again next year. You may choose one of these flexible payment options:
- Pay in Full Plan - due May 15, 2020
- 2-pay Plan - payments due May and Nov
- 4-pay Plan - payments due May/Sept/Dec/Mar
- 10-pay Plan - payments due each month July through April

! Changing of your payment plan option after the 2020-21 enrollment has been submitted can only be accepted after April 1, 2020. Applicable fees will apply. News from the McNicholas Counseling Department
Summer Gym registration now open
Summer gym will be offered summer 2020 to current McNicholas High School students who want to earn their PE I or PE II credit. Summer gym registration is open as of February 5.
Registration and fee can be turned into the counseling office. Registrations will only be accepted if fee is attached. Please see attached registration information.

UC Medical Sciences Summer Institute 2020
High school juniors entering their senior year are eligible for the UC Medical Sciences Summer Institute. The two-week program will run 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday between July 13 - 24, 2020. The tuition cost is $1,000.
Interested students should email
a copy of their resume along with a
1
-3 paragraph personal statement on: 1) why they feel this program will benefit them and 2) any background/prior related experience that would help make them a great fit for the program to Shawn Adkins

The resume should include your current high school GPA and expected graduation year.
The application deadline is Thursday, February 20, 2020.
University of Dayton School of Engineering event
Juniors and seniors are invited to explore a career in engineering and the value of a University of Dayton education at this FREE event. Participate in hands-on laboratories with UD faculty and students while learning how we infuse creativity and innovation into engineering design. Meet faculty, current students and admission representatives. Parent programming is also provided.

University of Miami Summer Scholars Program
How many students get the chance to build an architectural portfolio, create a business plan, meet executives from collegiate and professional sport administrations, all while earning six college credits? At UM, students explore their academic passion and consider their future career opportunities when they attend the University of Miami's Summer Scholars program. High-achieving high school sophomores and juniors can gain an authentic college experience and earn six college credits in a variety of academic areas. For students looking to gain hands-on experience in a more condensed format, we also offer our incredible two-week, non-credit academy program for an intense experiential learning environment. Sr. Dorothy Stang Presentation
We had the unique opportunity today to remember and celebrate the life and legacy of
Sister Dorothy Stang, a sister of Notre Dame de Namur who was martyred 15 years ago this month. Sister Dorothy grew up in southwest Ohio and then devoted four decades of her life as a Catholic missionary accompanying landless peasants and their families in the rainforests of Brazil.
Today's gathering featured the testimony of Samuel Clements, who produced the film The Student, the Nun & the Amazon after traveling from London to the Amazon in order to witness her work and advocacy firsthand. Today's opportunity provided the members of our community which a chance to reflect on what it means to follow our curiosity, to respond generously to God's call for our lives, and to follow in the footsteps of Christ in serving the poor and caring for God's creation.
Friday Morning Mass
Fr. Paul Ruwe will be present this Fri., Feb. 7, to celebrate the Eucharist in our school's chapel at 7:00 am. All students, faculty, staff, and parents who are seeking to deepen their commitment to prayer are welcome and invited to be present.
Day of Giving is a big success!
Last Friday, Jan. 31, McNicholas held its annual Day of Giving. The activities include Penny Day and the annual student Blood Drive. Students donated $2,500 in loose change, and all the money supports Catholic education from the local level right here in Cincinnati (CISE) to the international level (Project Education in Nicaragua). In over 20 years of Penny Days here at McNick, Rockets have raised over $110,000 for Catholic education. Rockets donated 47 units of blood with the potential of saving 141 lives.

Rockets assist with IHM Science Day
During Catholic Schools Week, several McNicholas students volunteered to help feeder school Immaculate Heart of Mary with experiments during Science Day. "The students were energetic and so engaged with our students," Leslie Fehlinger and Diana Loebker, co-chairs, said.
"Their positive
attitudes and respectful demeanor set a great example for our Crusaders. Our kids really enjoyed working with them."

The McNicholas Boutique is a "shop" dedicated to re-purposing and providing dance and special occasion apparel for women in the McNicholas community. Our hope is that students might enjoy an event without worrying about the cost of a dress and accessories.
We have a variety of styles and sizes of gently used dresses for this, and other special occasions. The shop will be open after school until 5 p.m. today,

Schulte, Kouche named Rocket Athletes of the Week sponsored by BSN
Junior Nick Schulte scored 14 points (9/10FT) while dishing out six assists in last weeks' men's basketball games. Senior Maddie Kouche scored 17 points (5-three point FG) in a big win over St. Henry.
Inaugural Spring Training Tailgate
Softball and baseball will host the first spring training tailgate on Saturday, Feb. 8 from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. in the Main Gym. The corn hole tournament will raise funds for both programs.
