January 15, 2020
Mr. Dave Mueller
Principal's Corner

At Mass for the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord on Sunday, the priest urged us to listen as Jesus did when he emerged from the water and heard a voice from the heavens say, "You are my beloved son; with you I am well pleased." The homily nudged me to be even more alert to God at work in the lives of our students when I see them arriving in the morning and in the halls throughout the day. They are beloved. God is well pleased with them. They have extraordinary potential to help their current and future family, friends, and colleagues know that they, in turn, are beloved and pleasing to God. In what ways can we as an extended school community best guide them to stay mindful of God's presence in themselves and others?

GCL update : You probably have heard the news that Roger Bacon and Purcell Marian high schools have announced that they will withdraw completely from the GCL Coed League as of 2021-22. Their football programs have already withdrawn. This turn of events results in the closest GCL Coed League school now being about 35 miles away from McNicholas. The Archdiocese has given McNicholas permission to explore alternatives to membership in the GCL. We will keep you informed about the progress of this exploration.

Welcome Class of 2024 !: McNicholas, like all Catholic High Schools in the Archdiocese, mailed admissions packets today. Please continue to encourage families to register on the opening day for registration, January 29. Please continue to spread the word about $6000 EdChoice Scholarships to residents of the Cincinnati, Norwood, West Clermont, Batavia, Felicity-Franklin, and Clermont Northeastern school districts.

News from the McNicholas Counseling Department

Senior Parents--Information for graduation program needed
As we move closer to graduation, the Counseling Department will be collecting information for the Class of 2020 graduation program. On March 5, March 26, and April 2 during flex bells, seniors will have an opportunity to turn in copies of their military letter of intent, trade school acceptance, college acceptance and/or scholarship information (for all colleges, not just the attending college).  The information is for the graduation program purposes only. Scholarship amounts are published as a whole for the Class of 2020, not individually. If you have any questions or concerns, please email Jennifer Tumser at jtumser@mcnhs.org .

Junior Retreats
Many members of the Class of 2021 entered the new year and the new semester with an opportunity for their first overnight retreat at the midway point of their junior year. The young women experienced their retreat at the Jesuit Spiritual Center in Milford, and the retreat for young men took place at the Bergamo Center in Dayton. Both retreats were supported by a team consisting of faculty, staff, and alumni from the McNicholas Class of 2019. May these opportunities for retreat and faith-building continue to bear good fruit in the weeks and months to come as the students continue to draw nearer to Christ and to one another!

Kairos 121 Retreat
Please keep in your prayers the students, faculty, and staff who will participate in our school's 121st Kairos Retreat next week at the Jesuit Spiritual Center in Milford from Tuesday, January 21 through Friday, January 24.

Friday Morning Mass during the Month of January
The Friday morning Mass at 7:00 am in our school's chapel will take place during each of the Fridays in the month of January. Please know that all members of the extended McNicholas community are welcome and invited to join together for worship.

Court and Honor Guards announced
The 68th Mardi Gras Pageant and Ball will be Sunday, February 16, at McNicholas High School. As families begin making preparations for Mardi Gras, please be aware of the attire expectations communicated to students:

  • Midriffs (both front and side) should not be exposed, and the length of the dress (including any slits) should extend past the mid-thigh (below finger-tip length).

Annual McNicholas Blood Drive scheduled for Fri., Jan. 31

Did you know that more than 13 percent of Hoxworth Blood Center's total yearly blood collections come from high school blood drives? In fact, during the last school year, there were approximately 12,000 donors at high school blood drives. Since one donation can save up to three lives, about 36,000 Tri-state patients were helped by students in just one year.
Rockets have a chance to donate blood on Friday, Jan. 31 on campus. Parents, please  click here for more information on parental consent and donor requirements .
Please click here to schedule   your donation appointment on campus. Please contact Pat Farwick at  pfarwick@mcnhs.org  of  you have any questions. Thank you!

The McNicholas Boutique now accepting donations for Mardi Gras

The McNicholas Boutique is a "shop" dedicated to re-purposing and providing dance and special occasion apparel for women in the McNicholas community.   Our hope is that students might enjoy an event without worrying about the cost of a dress and accessories.

As we prepare for Mardi Gras in February, we are seeking donations of formal and dressy dresses, shoes, and accessories. The Boutique is also in need of racks and small shelves. We also accept cash donations. Please bring your donations of clothing or accessories to the main office. If you have any questions, please contact Mary Beth Sandmann at msandmann@mcnhs.org.
