Where Love Becomes Flesh: A Vincentian Reflection on the Works of Mercy

Our FamVin formation team created a Vincentian reflection on the works of mercy to help deepen our understanding and commitment to them as members of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul. For the next 15 weeks, we will focus on each of the 14 works of mercy the Gospel presents to us.

Mercy as the Heartbeat of the Gospel

Mercy is the radiant core of the Gospel. In the Scriptures, we find a God who abounds in compassion, who hears the cry of the poor, who heals the brokenhearted, and who invites His followers to do likewise. Jesus, in the parable of the Last Judgment (Matthew 25), leaves no room for ambiguity: what we do to the least of our brothers and sisters, we do to Him.

The Church has traditionally summarized the corporal and spiritual responses to human suffering in what are called the Works of Mercy. These fourteen actions—seven corporal and seven spiritual—have been lived and promoted by saints and communities throughout the centuries. They are not optional, rather they are constitutive elements of Christian discipleship. St. Vincent de Paul, the great apostle of charity, did not merely encourage acts of mercy—he organized them, systematized them, and consecrated his life to them.

5. Visit the Sick

Illness isolates. St. Vincent and his followers saw in every sick person the suffering Christ. To visit the sick is to bring healing not just through medicine but through presence, compassion, and hope.

Food for thought:

  • Do I neglect the sick because I fear their weakness?
  • How can I bring joy to those who are confined?
  • Do I see Christ in the vulnerable?

Prayer

Healer of the Broken,

With your peace enter the rooms of the suffering.

Let me be your presence of hope,

bringing comfort, not just cures.

Teach me the grace of staying with the wounded.

Amen.

Hail Mary, Full of Grace ....

The Hail Mary is beautiful in all languages so; to honor Our Lady and to learn how our brothers and sisters around the world come to her in prayer, this section of our newsletter will be devoted to a different version of the Hail Mary each week. Don't forget to add a Hail Mary in your native language along with the one you just learned. Mother Mary, pray for us.

Afrikaans

Wees gegroet Maria, vol genade,

die Here is met u.

Gesëen is u onder die vroue,

en gesëen is Jesus, die vrug van u skoot.

Heilige Maria,

Moeder van God,

bid vir ons, sondaars,

nou en in die uur van ons dood.

Amen.

Vincentians in Action

Vincentians at Our Lady of the Lakes - St. Bede in Ingleside are working hard making their Church's rummage sale a success. Between setting up, helping shoppers, and serving with their whole hearts, we are sure this will be a successful event for both the Church and shoppers who attend. Their efforts reflect just a few of the many ways Vincentians are living out their mission in action. The rummage sale is Thursday, June 18 through Saturday, June 20.

Blessed Frederic's Fund

The Council-to-Conference Committee of the ADC administrates the Blessed Frederic’s Fund to assist conferences whose bank balances have fallen to low levels that keep them from assisting their Friends in Need. The Fund was created to give these conferences a shot in the arm when their ability to do their work is diminished by lack of funds.

However, what it all comes down to is something we all learned in Kindergarten – Sharing!

Having such a large area in our Archdiocesan Council, all of Lake and Cook County, it is no surprise that we have a full spectrum of financial situations amongst our Conferences.

Some of our Conferences are blessed with more funds and less calls for help and others are blessed with more calls for help and less funds.

This program will allow those Conferences who need a little financial support to add their names to our list so Conferences looking to help from their blessings can contact them and create a relationship that will benefit the neighbors who come to us.

Like my Kindergarten teacher used to say, “Sharing is Caring” and I’d like to add, it is also helping those in need with the Faith that our fellow Vincentians care as much as we do and will be good stewards of the funds we entrust them with. The same faith our benefactors give us.

"New Beginnings"

Excerpted from For Your Love Alone by Mike Syslo

Traditionally, January, the beginning of the New Year, is the time that people choose to re-make their lives. It is in this month that diets are started, exercise plans go into effect, new regimens are begun, new disciplines are tried, new forms of spirituality are tested, and millions of resolutions are made and broken. January is the time when you reflect on the past and resolve to make the future better.

Christmas in July Means the Magic of Christmas Is Just Around the Corner!

Dear Vincentians,

As we celebrate Christmas in July at our Orland Park and Libertyville Thrift Stores, we are also beginning preparations for one of our most heartwarming programs of the year, the Magic of Christmas.

This year, we are excited to host five Santa Workshops and four Christmas Parties, all taking place at SVdP Conference locations throughout our Council. These events provide an opportunity for Vincentians to come together and bring the joy and wonder of Christmas to families who may be struggling and wondering how Santa will visit their children this year.

Our inaugural Magic of Christmas program was a tremendous success. Conferences enjoyed hosting the events, and the families who attended were truly grateful for the kindness, generosity, and Christmas spirit shared by our Vincentian family.

We look forward to making our 2nd Annual Magic of Christmas even more memorable. Watch for additional details in the July 3 newsletter, including ways you can help bring hope, joy, and the magic of Christmas to families in need this holiday season.

If you would like to get involved, please email me at teresa@svdpchicago.org or call me at (773) 779-6700, ext. 108.
