Architecture Archive is Awarded Graham Foundation Grant

In 2017, the Graham Foundation awarded $413,300 to 41 projects by organizations. The School of Architecture Archive's upcoming exhibition Archive and Artifact: The Virtual and the Physical is among the grantees this year.

The exhibition, scheduled to open in October, 2018, will study and celebrate over 50 years of architecture education at The Cooper Union, chronicling, through the lens of thesis work, an historic half century of themes and typologies from 1966 to the present. The exhibit will showcase the formative student work of Cooper Union graduates. Projects presented will span the tenure of founding dean John Q. Hejduk, Anthony Vidler, and recent works completed under the deanship of Nader Tehrani. The exhibit will feature drawn, born-digital and three-dimensional works, and will coincide with the public launch of an online visual database of the school's pedagogy that is now in development.

Summer Program: Year Five

The School of Architecture has recently finished its fifth year of Introduction to Architecture summer courses for College and High School students. The 2017 summer class of 36 students joins us primarily from the greater New York City area as well as New England, California, Colorado, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Hong Kong, China and Italy.

For four weeks, the students worked in the design studios lead by a faculty team comprised of Jeremy Jacinth (AR '13), Emily Vo Nguyen (AR '11), Wes Hiatt and teaching assistant Athena Unroe (AR '18). Digital workshops were lead by Katherine Sullivan (AR '18) and Sam Koopman (AR '17). Classes in Descriptive Geometry, Building Technologies, Structures, Shop Techniques and Freehand Drawing expanded the studio conversations. The four week program introduced methods of observation, analysis, abstraction and design through the device of an utilitarian object: an umbrella.
