ADVANCING AWARENESS OF HOW ARCHITECTURE ENRICHES LIFE

Play a Role in Advancing Awareness of How Architecture Makes Lives Better

MAKE A DONATION DURING MAF’S ANNUAL APPEAL CAMPAIGN

For more than five decades, the Michigan Architectural Foundation has provided grant support and free programming that creatively connects people and architecture – which would not be possible without MAF’s generous donors. During November and December, MAF is conducting its Annual Appeal Campaign, a drive to increase year-end contributions to support MAF’s grants and endowment funds.

MAF grants and programs that benefit from donor contributions include its Evans Graham Historic Preservation Award (find out more about the grant and 2024 awardee, the Hotel Casa Blanca); MAF’s Scholarship Program (for college and university architecture students); Damian Farrell Architecture Awareness Grants (see the article about the upcoming application deadline elsewhere in this article); Education Awareness grants; and educational programming for K-12 students that is designed to pique the curiosity and interest of young people in the built environment.

Designing Architecture’s Impact

2024 MAF SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT AARON COMSTOCK

One of the things that graduate architecture student Aaron Comstock loves most about architecture is its ability to impact people. “I feel that too often architecture is only thought of as an aesthetic design field, but it is much more than that,” he said.

Aaron, in the second year of his graduate architecture program at the University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, is the 2024 recipient of MAF’s HED Alvin Ernest Harley AIAS Graduate Scholarship.

A Different Side of Kahn

ALBERT KAHN-DESIGNED JEWELS

ON BELLE ISLE

You may know architect Albert Kahn’s Detroit’s industrial and office projects, like the Fisher Building. Did you know Kahn also designed two of Belle Isle’s architectural jewels: the Belle Isle Aquarium and the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory (see the latter in this month’s Architecture Road Trip, below).

Find out more about both buildings in this MAF Must See Michigan Architecture article (originally published May 2022).

MAF'S 2025 FORE A GREAT CAUSE GOLF OUTING TAKES PLACE MAY 19

The holiday season is upon us - but before you know it, golf season – and MAF’s Fore a Great Cause golf outing – will be back!

The 2025 event will be held on May 19 at Plum Hollow Country Club in Southfield.

The annual fundraiser is an excellent networking opportunity and a key source of support for the over $44,000 a year granted in architecture student scholarships, and MAF's architecture educational and awareness programs.

MAF Michigan Architecture Fall Road Trip

HISTORIC DETROIT

For our final MAF Architecture Road Trip of 2024, let’s explore some of the more unique and historical buildings in the Detroit area. In particular, the city of Detroit has a rich architectural history that is a tribute to its important and influential role in the late 19th and early 20th century. Most of the structures in this month’s road trip mark the early careers of both business leaders and their architects.

If you are planning a trip to Detroit (or want to make a virtual voyage), please consider visiting some of the following sites to learn more about Michigan architecture, and learn how our road trip series helps reinforce MAF’s mission of “advancing awareness of how architecture enriches life.”
