2013 Design Awards Winners

By: Tammie Fitzpatrick, AIA

It is with great joy that I present the 2013 AIA Central Pennsylvania Design Award Winners.  This year, we received 39 submissions from 12 architecture firms in our chapter.  The projects vary in use, size, scope, budget, and design.  For 2013, our chapter had the opportunity to collaborate with our AIA friends in Portland, Oregon.   Lead Juror, Nancy Merryman, Architect FAIA, is a partner with Linda Barnes, FAIA in the firm of MERRYMAN BARNES ARCHITECTS (MBA).  MBA'S work is broad in its range, with a focus on sustainability. A graduate of the University of Oregon, Nancy is active in the Portland Community, serving on the Portland Design Review Commission and the Architects Council of Oregon along with a number of other organizations.  Read more...

Skywriter
(Distinguished Service Award-James D. Reese, AIA)

By: Gregg Scott, AIA

Mr. Reese's acceptance speach

Revealing a message slowly and deliberately, using one stroke at a time takes patience and vision. Skywriters made a living designing and engineering messages that would mysteriously appear in patterns and script over an extended period of flight. As a young boy in the 1950's, I would gaze skyward and try to anticipate the letters and message before they were complete; sometime with success sometimes to no avail. A good mentor, like a skywriter will reveal the message slowly and deliberately for lasting impact and impression.  James D. Reese, AIA, the recent recipient of the Harry Rutledge Distinguished Service Award for Lifetime Achievement, built his career mentoring young architects and other professionals in ways that were not always understood or appreciated at the time. Upon reflection, the lessons were many and the impact profound. Read more...

John de Vitry Receives President's Award

By: Wendy Tippetts, AIA

John de Vitry Architect is an independent thinker, visionary, and activist.  Over the years, John has made significant contributions to the profession of architecture and the built environment.   Full of curiosity and engaged in the world at large,  a great traveler,  John has always brought what he has learned from the outside, to our community in Central Pennsylvania; and through this never ending seeking, he has brought his insight and experience to influence positive change in our community.

John de Vitry

Born in France, John moved with his family of artisans to Bainbridge Pennsylvania at a young age.  While studying engineering in undergraduate school at Notre Dame John spent some time working in Laos for Dr. Thomas Dooley on establishing medical clinics and hospitals in Laos.  Prior to completing his education in engineering, John transferred to Catholic University to pursue his lifelong interest in architecture.
