We just got through Labor Day -- did you have a relaxing holiday? The passage of Labor Day means school is starting and our snow birds are starting their return. The roads are busier and already it seems like the holiday season is about to start. Where did the summer go?
This is the time of year when I like to declutter. I know, I know, most of you believe in Spring Cleaning, but I just can't seem to get into the mood in the Spring.
However, the prospect of holiday decorating always spurs me to action! And when I declutter, I really declutter! Several years ago I followed Marie Kondo's book, 'The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up" and it truly was life-changing!
I got rid of so much of the stuff I'd been hauling around for decades. Things I haven't touched, read or worn in years. Photographs of people I no longer knew or those with only scenery. It was a major clearing out of my life.
And you know what happened? Not only did I feel like a huge weight had lifted off my shoulders, but I must have made room in my life because it wasn't long after that, that I met the man of my dreams!
After a purge that big, you'd think this would not need to be an ongoing process! But, here I am, three years later and once again I find myself with overflowing closets and drawers no one has seen into since moving into this home.
This whole decluttering thing is an area where the boyfriend and I differ greatly. He believes once you've invested in something, you should keep it, even if you aren't using it, 'just in case'.
I am not attached to material things so if I'm not using it -- out it goes! And honestly, there are only one or two things over the years I wish I'd held onto. Given how much stuff has gone away, that isn't too bad.
Still, I can totally see his point and he does have a number of amazing sentimental items that he loves even though he doesn't use them much (or ever). Or when he needs to fix something, he miraculously has what he needs -- there is something to be said for that!
Me? I may have to buy something over if I need it, but that's okay. At least it isn't cluttering up my life now -- nor am I paying to store stuff I don't use.
The big cleanup for me this year though, is my office. I've been in this space for the last three years and it is amazing how much 'stuff' has accumulated. Project ideas. Post it notes. Stacked racks of files I never look at. Boxes and boxes of brochures and notepads and folders! Acccckkk it is suffocating!
I'm thinking about getting a new desk and completely rearranging so my office space is more efficient, less cluttered and more functional. Do I really need all this craaa.. junk?
I'm looking around and methinks not. Plus, it would be helpful if the boyfriend had some office space too.
