According to proxy statements filed in the January 1-December 31, 2020 period, the median Total Compensation awarded to a board member in the latest fiscal year (most often, 2019) was $189,980 in the Russell 3000 and $280,000 in the S&P 500. In both indexes, these figures represent an increase from the previous fiscal year: the rate of growth was higher (4.6 percent) for companies in the Russell 3000 compared to the S&P 500 (1.8 percent)*.
Women ask me all the time - how much do you get paid to be on a board? That depends on the size of the company, and as you can see in the comments above, the larger companies pay quite well for board work. Smaller companies pay less, and startups most likely pay in equity with future revenue shares. There are all kinds of compensation packages for board directors of private and public companies. The point is you get paid to do your work on a for-profit company board. And you are in the room, and part of the decision- making process.
I am helping women get ready for boards, get their board certification, and get them on boards. The ACE Board Certification program is a worthwhile investment in yourself, your future and the world. So far, I have led 137 women through the ACE Live Board Certification Program, and they have passed the CDI Certification as qualified board members. Those women have filled 77 corporate boards, 7 have become CEO’s and 4 new companies have been formed. This program works!
If you want to get yourself ready to serve on boards, the next step would be to register for one of our upcoming courses, (NEW Online Course or LIVE Fall Program) but time is running out!

The ACE track record is speaking for itself – we just completed our Live Spring class and now have a total of 137 ACE graduates: they have filled 77 corporate board seats (paid), and 7 have become CEO’s of companies and 4 new companies have been formed by ACE grads after going through the program. Those are great results! And more ACE grads are in board interviews right now. This program works if you work it.
