Greetings!
Question

Are there some horses that are beyond hope and will never make good riding horses, because they have been so badly treated by humans in the past?

Answer

While there are some horses that have been so mistreated that they are virtually unusable, I believe that the number is very, very few. If one fails to save a horse for some useful activity it is, in my opinion, virtually always because we are short of the mark in understanding how to meet the horse's needs. I have literally never worked with a horse without significant improvement.

Sincerely,
Love the Love shown in each and every product!

Monty Roberts’ Mustang and Transition Horse Program

Monty and his team at the Monty Roberts International Learning Center (MRILC) have gentled and started horses from our adoption partners and working through remedial issues with others. All of the horses are desensitized to a variety of objects and stimuli – to make them safe and willing partners for their future owners.

For almost 25 years the MRILC has been dedicated to promoting and teaching gentle, effective alternatives to violence and force during the starting and training of horses. And students visiting the MRILC will have an opportunity to work with the horses in the MRTHP program – learning the Monty Roberts methodology and how to practically apply it to working with horses.

Each of these horses has come from one of The Right Horse Initiative partner organisations (Hope for Horses, The American Saddlebred Legacy Foundation, Wild at Heart Horse Rescue and Win Place Home) and will be available for adoption.

The Right Horse Initiative is a program of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).

MONTY'S CHALLENGE

Test yourself each week as I challenge you to answer the question below. I mean this. Sit down and write an answer. Don't wait for my answer next week. If you have been reading my Weekly Questions and Answers for the last six months, you should be in a position to do this. Send your answer to my team at: [email protected]

Why should you bother? Because it will help you focus. There is probably a comparable question in your life that needs answering... or will be. If you can gain insight into how to go about answering a practical question that is loosely related to your problem, this exercise will help you answer your nagging question. Then read my answer. I want all of my students to learn to be better trainers than me.That's good for you and good for horses!
