ARE THERE DANGERS IN YOUR ELECTRICAL PANEL?
This is a common problem we often see. It’s called “double tapping” where multiple circuits are wired to a single circuit breaker. In this photo, the first and third breakers have two circuit wires attached. The second and fourth breakers are correctly wired. The connection to the breaker (the lug) is only intended to hold one wire. When multiple wires are connected, they can become loose, and the electricity can “jump” the gap between the two wires causing an arc or spark between the two wires. This creates heat which potentially can cause a fire. The second concern is when two circuits are combined, the outgoing electrical demand (the load) will exceed what the circuit breaker is rated for and the breaker will trip.
This condition is only visible when the electrical panel cover is removed. Only a licensed electrician or home inspector should remove the panel cover, due to the danger of live electrical wires. If you have concerns about your electrical panel, contact an electrician to determine if it is safe but please DON’T remove it yourself. We want to be able to inspect your next home.
