Happy Friday!
No matter if you are an experienced gardener or want to try it out for the first time, now is the time to start planning your 2026 garden. While you'll need to wait until after the last frost to start actually planting outside, you CAN start deciding what you want to grow and even start seeds indoors now.
In case you were unaware, there are cool weather crops and Summer crops. Cool weather crops are what you want to focus on now. Later in the season you can transition to warmer season crops like tomatoes, peppers, beans, etc. and if you plan correctly, you can even get another round of cool weather crops in during the Fall.
Here are some cool weather crops to start indoors now:
-Onions
-Broccoli
-Kale
-Lettuce
-Brussels Sprouts
-Spinach
Other crops, like these, must be directly sown in the soil:
-Potatoes
-Radishes
-Beets
-Peas
-Carrots
The picture above is from the seeds I started indoors earlier this week. I've got some Onions, Brussels Sprouts, Lettuce, Broccoli, and Spinach going so far. If you want to start plants indoors, you don't need a ton of fancy equipment. A basic LED or fluorescent shop light, a seed starting tray, some soil, and a few seeds is all you need. If you want to accelerate seed germination, remember to keep them in a warm, humid environment.
