We are still recruiting participants for our JA Job Shadow program scheduled to run between March 14^th-16^th. We have now opened registrations more broadly to youth between the ages of 16-20; these youth could be enrolled in school full-time.

HWDSB Continuing Education Hill Park Learning Centre

 Hill Park Learning Centre is accepting registrations for the Food Safety Training - Food Handler Certification Course and Computer Basics Level 1 Course. Limited spots are available. Please see the attached flyers for specifics.

• Are you passionate about food? Looking for employment in the food service industry or want to provide safe food in your home? Learn the basic principles of handling food in a safe manner with our FREE Food Safety Training - Food Handler Certification Course.

• Do you have little to no experience using a computer? Our course is designed to build confidence while providing practical hands-on computer skills and knowledge. Learn the basic principles of using a computer with our FREE Computer Basics Level 1 Course.

ELIGIBILITY:

• Must be able to attend the course independently without the aid of a support worker
• Participants are required to be 19 years of age or older (we can accept a small percentage of 18-year-old participants provided they are not attending high school)
• Resident of Ontario
• Have less than Grade 12 education OR
• Be assessed as having to improve reading, writing, or math skills OR
• Participants who are newcomers to Canada require a Canadian Language Benchmark Level 5 or 6 in Reading/Writing/Speaking/Listening (some Level 7's accepted)

All participants must pre-register prior to start date. This will involve completing online registration forms and an assessment to confirm suitability (nothing scary). We offer assistance during this process.

Meaningful discussion is a hallmark of the Cornerstone Program. Everyone has a voice. We pride ourselves in providing an atmosphere of inclusion and strive to maintain a positive culture. Our courses typically attract an eclectic mix of people. As such, we require all potential learners to be open-minded and thoughtful towards others in the classroom.

Women Taking The Wheel

In celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8, we are hosting HSR’s Women Taking the Wheel info session. This will be an amazing opportunity to hear from a panel of bus operators and meet members of the recruitment committee and learn more about this exciting opportunity. One of our goals is to encourage more women to pursue a career in transit and continue to build a workforce that reflects our community. However, that does not prevent other genders who qualify to apply.

Date: Wednesday, March 8, 2023 

Time: 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Conversations with Black youth: Reflections on Canada’s labour market

The history of Black labour in Canada has led young Black people today to understand their labour market prospects differently than many other population groups.  

We spoke with Black youth across Canada to understand their perceptions and experiences with the Canadian labour market. Using a snowball sampling method to reach youth across the country, we conducted semi-structured conversational interviews that were designed to understand perspectives and examine of areas most relevant to each participant.  

Many of the youth we spoke to referred to Canada’s historic racial barriers and segregated workforces.

For example, Jamal, a 24-year-old visual artist from Toronto, Ontario whose grandparents immigrated to Canada from Trinidad in the early 1950’s, reflects on his own opportunities compared to what he understands of his grandparents and parents:

My grandparents got here and basically just had to struggle to stay alive. Had to work just to stay alive and keep their children alive. There were no choices, there was no opportunity to find a new job because you didn’t like it or because you were being treated badly. They worked wherever they were able to find work, wherever anyone would have them. My generation has options, has choices and has opportunities to find work that we are passionate about – work that we actually want to do.

What can the data tell us about Black Canadians and the labour market?

Despite the contributions of previous generations, there are still significant differences in the employment and earnings of Black people relative to the rest of the Canadian adult population.  

First, some background on current-day Black Canadians as a population group:

In the last 20 years, the Black population in Canada has nearly doubled in size to 1,198,540 (2016).

The Black population now accounts for 3.5% of Canada's total population and 15.6% of the population defined as a visible minority.

The Black population in Canada is a young demographic: it is younger than the total population of the country, with the median age for the Black population being 29.6 years, versus 40.7 years for the total population.

Black youth experience racial gaps in labour market outcomes: they have a higher unemployment rate, a lower employment rate and lower earnings compared to other Canadian youth.

Here’s what the 2016 Census tells us:

The employment rate of Black people of all ages is lower than in the rest of the population.

For those of working age (25-64 years old), the overall unemployment rate was 10.1% for the Black population compared to the Canadian average of 6.4% for the same cohort.

Black youth (15-24 years old) had a higher unemployment rate (24.3%) compared to the Canadian youth average (15.5%).

In 2016, the employment rate was 78.1% for Black men and 71.0% for Black women, compared with 82.6% and 75.5%, respectively, for their counterparts in the rest of the population.

The employment rate gap grew significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic. In July of 2021, the unemployment rate for Black Canadians was 16.8%, while the national average was 11.2%.
