ENHANCED FREEBEE SERVICE

As part of the upcoming changes, and based on the County’s analysis, Miami-Dade County will discontinue Route 115 due to historically low ridership.

In lieu of this change, the County is introducing new routes, including Route 14 from Omni Terminal in Miami to Mount Sinai Medical Center via the MacArthur Causeway, Alton Road, South Pointe Drive, Washington Avenue, Collins Avenue and 41 Street, which will partially serve the areas affected by the discontinuation of Route 115.

To help mitigate the impact of the County’s upcoming discontinuation of Route 115 and provide a suitable public transit option to the affected customers, the City has been working with the County on a plan to augment the City’s Freebee on-demand service in the affected area. Final details of the enhanced Freebee service are currently being developed between City and County staff.

ENVIRONMENT & SUSTAINABILITY

King Tide Season

King tide season is here! During the upcoming king tide periods, the City of Miami Beach may experience higher than normal tides that result in street and property flooding in low-lying areas.

Higher than normal tides are expected during the following dates:

November 25 - November 28

In preparation for the king tides, staff continues to clean stormwater treatment systems to reduce pollutants from entering the waterways and also conduct inspections. In addition, temporary pumps may have been installed to mitigate flooding in low-lying neighborhoods. Learn more.

Miami Beach Composting Bin Program

Homeowners in Miami Beach interested in composting are invited to participate in Surfrider’s backyard composting program. Residents can request a FREE compost bin after completing a short educational workshop.

Request your compost bin: https://bit.ly/44i9Txy

Supplies are limited and will be distributed on a first-come first-serve basis.

Fight the Bite

Take precautions against mosquito-borne illness by applying bug spray, avoiding areas with high mosquito populations, and wearing long pants and shirts when possible - especially during sunrise and sunset when mosquitoes are most active.

To prevent the bite and spread of disease by mosquitoes, remember to drain and cover.

  • Flush water from water-bearing plants so they don't become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Disposing of excess water at least once a week disrupts the mosquitoes' life cycle, preventing mosquito egg deposits and killing existing larvae in the process.
  • Survey your garden and backyard, checking landscaping for current and future locations of standing water. Mosquitoes need as little as a bottle cap of water to reproduce, so every little bit counts.
  • Eliminate all sources of standing water by emptying potential water-holding yard items, including pots, buckets and wheelbarrows weekly. Make sure to drain items more frequently following rainfall.

Gas-Powered Leaf Blower Ban

The Miami Beach City Commission voted unanimously to phase out gasoline-powered leaf blowers as part of the city’s commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Similar to the city’s regulation on polystyrene and plastic straws/stirrers, the new ordinance followed a phased implementation approach. The nine-month warning period began on November 1, 2022 and ended on July 31, 2023. Full enforcement is now in effect.

Initial violations in a 12-month period carry a $250 fine while the second violation in a 12-month period carries a $500 fine. The third violation and each additional violation in a 12-month period carries a $1,000 fine.

MB MAGAZINE

MB Magazine Fall 2023 Issue

The latest issue of MB magazine is out now!

You may be wondering why the Fall 2023 issue of MB magazine is sporting a ballerina with a gold shovel on the cover. It’s because the City of Miami Beach recently broke ground on the Collins Park Artist Workforce Housing Project. Once completed, the eight-story building will house up to 30 ballet students from Miami City Ballet while also providing affordable housing for artists, teachers and city employees who meet financial eligibility requirements. You can read more in “Workforce Housing Steals Spotlight in Collins Park” on page 40.

Many people know that Miami Beach is famous for its art deco architecture, but few people know there are 14 historic districts throughout the city, each with their own characteristics and charm. MB spoke to three architects who have worked extensively in the city and some of our top planners about the challenges in trying to preserve more than 100 years of history, yet still finding ways to solve modern challenges. “Building on History” begins on page 12.

This issue also introduces you to three single moms who turned to the city’s Family Pathways program for help with some daunting challenges they were facing. You can read their stories in “Helping Families Overcome Adversity” on page 18.

It takes a small army to keep the sparkle in a city like Miami Beach. MB tagged along with the city’s street cleaners to see how the magic happens as you’ll read in “Polishing the Luster” on page 8.

As a reminder, Nov. 7 is Election Day in Miami Beach. You’ll find general voting information in MB’s special election section on page 44. Read the full issue.
