Free Flu Shots for Miami Beach Youth

The city has sustained its partnership with Borinquen Medical Centers, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, and The Children’s Trust to provide free flu vaccines to youth from October 27-29, 2021 at the following locations during afterschool hours and a teacher planning day: Miami Beach Senior High School, Miami Beach Fienberg Fisher K-8, and Miami Beach Nautilus Middle School. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), getting a flu vaccine will not protect against COVID-19, however, flu vaccination has many other important benefits. Flu vaccines have been shown to reduce the risk of flu illness, hospitalization, and flu-related death in children. Getting a flu vaccine this fall will be more important than ever, not only to reduce risk from flu but also to help conserve potentially scarce health care resources.

Fall 2021 Issue

The Fall 2021 issue of MB magazine is out now.

South Beach may be known around the world as a top travel destination, but the nearby North Beach neighborhood of Miami Beach could be generating its own buzz in the coming years thanks to the creation of the North Beach Community Redevelopment Agency, or CRA. As you’ll discover in our cover story: “North Beach May Be Next Big Thing,” the neighborhood now has a bright future with many new projects in various stages of development. For those that don’t know, North Beach is located between 63 Street and 87 Terrace from south to north — and the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay from east to west.

You can get an extra copy at City Hall or click here to read the full issue online.
Water Meter Installations

During the next several months, a new Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) water meter will be installed across the city. We have contracted with Badger Meter and Utility Metering Solutions (UMS) to perform the installations. The new technology will allow our Public Works team to easily identify potential leaks throughout the system while providing access to more up-to-date consumption information online.

If you have any further questions about the project, please don’t hesitate to contact us at 305.673.7575 ext 22112 or visit www.miamibeachfl.gov/meters.

Risk Rating 2.0: FEMA’s New Approach to Flood Insurance

FEMA is changing the way the National Flood Insurance Program prices insurance to more accurately reflect risk. Current National Flood Insurance Program policyholders can now contact their insurance company or insurance agent to learn more. Phase 1 includes new policies on October 1, 2021 and Phase II includes remaining policies renewing on or after April 1, 2022. Click here to learn more about Risk Rating 2.0.
King Tides

King tides, the highest tides of the year, are expected November 3 - November 9.

When King Tides rise to an elevation higher than the adjacent land, flooding is often exhibited. Since Miami Beach is low-lying and near sea level, the city is particularly vulnerable to King Tide flooding. Miami Beach also faces flood risk from storms, hurricanes, and sea level rise and is implementing a holistic climate resilience strategy to address these flood risks.

Avoid floodwaters and report flooding to 305.673.7625 or [email protected].

For more info and tips to stay safe and dry, please visit: www.mbrisingabove/kingtides.
Seawalls

Of the 53 miles of seawalls in Miami Beach, only four miles are publicly owned. Private properties play a crucial role in the city's seawall program. Properties that experience tidal flooding or are proposing new construction and major renovations are required to upgrade their seawalls to be built at an elevation of 5.7' NAVD. Visit the City's website to learn more about the seawall program.
Watch Out for the Little One

Remember to watch out for the little one!

Every year from April to November, our beaches become a nesting ground for endangered sea turtles and their hatchlings.

The City of Miami Beach has adopted a Turtle Nesting Protection Ordinance to minimize the impact of artificial lighting on hatchlings and nesting sea turtles in an effort to protect the endangered species on our beaches.

Keep Fertilizer at Bay, Not in the Bay

Beautiful and serene, Biscayne Bay Provides recreational, cultural and economic well-being for our entire community. To help keep the bay healthy and pristine, the City of Miami Beach has prohibited the use of fertilizer application from June 1 through November 1. Show your bay some love. Ditch the fertilizer.

For more information on fertilizer application outside of the restricted period visit www.MBRisingAbove.com/fertilizers.
Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

Actions you take everyday can have an impact on our environment, lowering our carbon footprint and minimizing waste. Remember the three R’s: reduce, reuse, recycle!

Drain and Cover

To prevent the bite and spread of disease by mosquitoes, remember to drain and cover.

  • Flush water from water-bearing plants so they don't become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Disposing of excess water at least once a week disrupts the mosquitoes' life cycle, preventing mosquito egg deposits and killing existing larvae in the process.

  • Survey your garden and backyard, checking landscaping for current and future locations of standing water. Mosquitoes need as little as a bottle cap of water to reproduce, so every little bit counts.

  • Eliminate all sources of standing water by emptying potential water-holding yard items, including pots, buckets and wheelbarrows weekly. Make sure to drain items more frequently following rainfall.
