Composting
Protect the bay by composting in five easy steps:
- Add your "browns" and "greens" in thin layers of 3 - 6 inches, lightly wetting each layer as you add it.
- Sprinkle some garden soil or topsoil between layers to stimulate the composting organisms.
- Use a pitchfork to turn the compost pile once per week.
- A happy composting pile will gradually shrink, brown and start to emit an "earthy" odor.
- After two to three months, you should have a pile of cool, crumbly, earthy material that's ready for work.
You can drop off your compost at the following locations:
North Beach Compost Hub
85 Street and Collins Avenue
(Left side of road)
Miami Beach Botanical Garden
2000 Convention Center Drive

Don't Let Go
What comes up, must come down. Once balloons reach a body of water, animals can confuse them for food.

- Tissue paper pompoms
- Plastic-free pinwheels, kites or garden spinners
- Reusable flags
- Bunting

Sargassum (Seaweed)
Have you noticed additional brown seaweed along our beaches recently? This is referred to as sargassum.
This seaweed, which is abundant this time of year in the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico, is not dangerous, but can cause skin irritation from the tiny sea creatures that live in it. While this is a natural occurrence, the city is working with the county to do everything possible to minimize the inconvenience to our residents and visitors.
The highest concentrations of sargassum are found in Miami Beach between March and October. Please note, to protect nesting and hatchling sea turtles our team takes extra precautions prior to any heavy equipment being operated on the beach since sea turtle season runs concurrently with the influx of sargassum.

Drain and Cover
To prevent the bite and spread of disease by mosquitoes, remember to drain and cover.
- Flush water from water-bearing plants so they don't become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Disposing of excess water at least once a week disrupts the mosquitoes' life cycle, preventing mosquito egg deposits and killing existing larvae in the process.
- Survey your garden and backyard, checking landscaping for current and future locations of standing water. Mosquitoes need as little as a bottle cap of water to reproduce, so every little bit counts.
- Eliminate all sources of standing water by emptying potential water-holding yard items, including pots, buckets and wheelbarrows weekly. Make sure to drain items more frequently following rainfall.
