Beat the Heat
Temperatures in our area can rise to sweltering levels at any time during the year, but especially during the summer months. Climate conditions are such that we could experience a heat wave – an extended period of extreme heat that could be dangerous and life-threatening without proper precautions.
Here are some tips to help beat the heat:
- Stay indoors as much as possible and limit exposure to the sun.
- Never leave children or pets alone in closed vehicles.
- Drink plenty of water; even if you do not feel thirsty.
- Check on family, friends, and neighbors who do not have air conditioning and who spend much of their time alone.
|
|
|
Protect Your Pets from Extreme Heat
Temperatures in Miami-Dade County have reached record highs this summer— and the asphalt can get 40-60 degrees hotter than the air outside.
If you wouldn't walk barefoot on the concrete for more than a few seconds, imagine your dog's paws when touching the asphalt. To test the temperature of the ground, you can perform the "seven second test" by touching the ground with the back of your hand. If you are unable to keep your hand on the ground for more than seven seconds, it's too hot to take your pet for a walk.
For more ways to protect your furry friend from extreme heat, follow the tips below:
- Try to walk pets in the morning or evening, before the sun is at its hottest
- Providing pets with ample shade and water
- Walk them on grass or meadows to avoid pavement or asphalt
- Learn the signs of heat stroke
- Never leave pets inside the car
By following these tips, you can protect your pet from heat stroke and first, second- and third-degree burns.

MB Magazine Summer 2023
The latest issue of MB magazine is out now!
This edition of MB gives readers a backstage pass to meet Stéphane Denève, the new maestro at New World Symphony, who picks up the baton from 12-time Grammy Award winner Michael Tilson Thomas. Our feature: “New Maestro in Town” on page 32, also brings you the stories of some of the world-class fellows whose musical journeys brought them to Miami Beach. One young couple even managed to find love amid the orchestra strings.
On page 8, “Home is Where the Tanks Are” takes us high above Miami Beach to meet the team of artists who traveled from the Madrid-based Boa Mistura art collective in Spain to install a unique public art project involving two, 3-million gallon water tanks. At the center of the project is a heartwarming poem by 16-year-old Valentina Mena who wrote about leaving her native Argentina for a chance at a better life with her family in Miami Beach.
On page 46, we reminisced with Miami Beach PD Police Chief Rick Clements in “Violent Crime Drops as Police Chief Looks Back on 33-Year Career.”

Fight the Bite
Florida residents should take precautions by applying bug spray, avoiding areas with high mosquito populations, and wearing long pants and shirts when possible - especially during sunrise and sunset when mosquitos are most active.
To prevent the bite and spread of disease by mosquitoes, remember to drain and cover.
- Flush water from water-bearing plants so they don't become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Disposing of excess water at least once a week disrupts the mosquitoes' life cycle, preventing mosquito egg deposits and killing existing larvae in the process.
- Survey your garden and backyard, checking landscaping for current and future locations of standing water. Mosquitoes need as little as a bottle cap of water to reproduce, so every little bit counts.
- Eliminate all sources of standing water by emptying potential water-holding yard items, including pots, buckets and wheelbarrows weekly. Make sure to drain items more frequently following rainfall.

Iguana Remediation Program
Iguanas are considered an invasive species in the state of Florida. Without natural predators, these animals have been able to multiply in record numbers — causing significant damage along the entire Florida coastline. Iguanas can destroy residential and commercial landscape and vegetation as well as threaten our native and endangered species. They can also transmit the infectious bacterium Salmonella to humans through contact with water or surfaces contaminated by their feces.
To further enhance remediation efforts, the city has hired several iguana removal contractors to provide removal services on public property, including parks, greenspaces and near waterways, seven days a week in South, Mid, and North Beach areas. Vendors will be posting signage in the vicinity of their work.
Our city will continue to prioritize curbing the iguana population as well as developing strategies for a long-term remediation program. Visit our Iguana Information webpage for more information.
