Want to stay current with all things Miami Beach? Check out our first episode of MB Current—a bite-sized news segment where we give you all the information you need about events, city news and more.
Take Care of Our City Campaign

We are inviting you to be part of our "Take Care of Our City" campaign, which aims to promote local safety messaging, while welcoming our visitors and promoting all the cool and amazing things to do while they’re here—all through the lens of our locals.

To join us as a “local influencer”, send us a 10-30 second video of yourself, or your favorite selfie (or BOTH!) while sharing your top safety tip, and 3-5 things you love about Miami Beach—think businesses, events, parks, best places to eat, the beach or health and wellness initiatives.

Some guidelines for your video or photo submission:
  • Make it your voice. People want to hear from you!
  • Share hidden gems on how our visitors can “live like a local."
  • Example Safety Tip: “Fighting in the streets isn’t a good look” or “Our beaches are as hot as our people, so don’t forget your sunscreen.”
  • Send your submissions to [email protected] along with your name and social handles.

Residents who join the campaign will be entered into a drawing to win one of the following prizes:
  • Prize 1 - 2 night stay at the Loews Hotel
  • Prize 2 - $200 certificate at Lure Fish Bar
  • Prize 3 - SOAK Poolside Cabana for the day

The whimsical characters are intended to transport the viewer to a joyful place amidst the busy storefronts and walkways. As the viewer catches glimpses of each Happy Cloud that passes overhead, the clouds will travel with the viewer everywhere they go.
We Want Your Feedback!

Through the end of February, the city is reaching out to hundreds of residents and businesses to obtain their feedback on a community-satisfaction survey.

Your feedback is important to us. If you receive a survey in the mail, please fill it out.

The goal of the survey is to allow us to understand perceptions with services and to help prioritize needs. The survey can also bring issues to our attention and help us connect with and understand our broader community. Approximately 1,200 households and 600 businesses will be selected randomly to participate in the survey. The samples ensure that the entire community is well-represented.

Here are some facts for residents and business owners participating in the survey:
  • Your responses will remain anonymous.
  • Sending the survey is free (a paid postage return envelope has been provided to you).
  • You may also complete the survey online at mbsurvey1.org or over the phone at 913.829.1215.
  • If you prefer to take the survey in Spanish, call 1.844.811.0411 or call 1.844.247.8190 to take the survey in Creole.
Winter 2022 Issue Out Now

No matter what your New Year’s resolution, hopefully, you will make time to discover some of the amenities that make Miami Beach one of the great wellness destinations in the world. Our story: “Your Next Wellness Destination is Right Here” reports that Miami Beach residents and visitors have so many options for low- and no-cost wellness amenities that they often can’t make up their minds. It’s hard to choose between ice-skating on a summerlike day, bowling on the six city-owned lanes or deciding among volleyball, swimming, jogging or fishing.

As we report in “Miami Beach Steps into Climate Spotlight,” climate change is something that affects each and every one of us. Local policymakers, environmentalists, scientific experts and engaged members of the public will come together in Miami Beach from May 9-12 to discuss the global state of the climate.

Gas-Powered Leaf Blower Ban

The Miami Beach City Commission voted unanimously on Thursday, Jan. 20 to phase out gasoline-powered leaf blowers as part of the city’s commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Similar to the city’s regulation on polystyrene and plastic straws/stirrers, the new ordinance will follow a phased implementation approach. This includes a nine-month educational period from Feb. 1 – Oct. 31 followed by a nine-month warning period from Nov. 1 to Jul. 1, 2023. Full enforcement will commence on Aug. 1, 2023.

FEMA Flood Map Appeal

FEMA’s 90 Day Appeal Period for the proposed updated FEMA Flood Insurance Study Map lasts through March 1, 2022.

Miami Beach residents are able to submit evidence if they believe their property has been improperly mapped through the Appeal Process.

Swap Out Single-Use Straws

Did you know plastic straws and stirrers are no longer allowed in the City of Miami Beach? Ordinance 2019-4295 extends the single-use plastic straws/stirrers ban citywide to food service providers and retail stores. This is in addition to an existing ban from beaches, city properties, including marinas, parks, piers, docks, boat ramps, special events, and sidewalk cafes. Alternatives must be made of natural or reusable materials such as bamboo, wood and metal, among others.

Remember corn based plastics and other non-biodegradable plastics are not allowed!

Properties that experience tidal flooding or are proposing new construction and major renovations are required to upgrade their seawalls to be built at an elevation of 5.7 feet NAVD.

Fair Housing Spotlight

Having a child can be great! It definitely shouldn’t be what keeps you from living somewhere. If you are denied housing because you have (or are expecting) children, that is called familial status discrimination, and it is against the law.

This applies to both rentals and sales. If this happens to you, take action by calling Housing Opportunities Project for Excellence (HOPE), Inc. 305.651.HOPE (4673).
CERT

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training is a FEMA-funded program offered free of charge to interested residents, organizations, faith-based, as well as many others. CERT training provides disaster preparedness skills for the hazards that may impact your area. Sixteen hours are offered online and 8 hours are an in-class skills check. You are trained in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. You will acquire the skills needed to assist others in your neighborhood or workplace after an incident when professional responders are not immediately available to help. As a CERT member, you support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in your city.

A workplace CERT program, designed to operate in any type of workplace environment, can support and enhance existing capabilities. CERT-trained employees can participate in efforts to increase the preparedness and resilience of the workplace and community. The Basic CERT training is a FEMA-funded program offered free and covers disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact the workplace and area. Sixteen hours are offered online and 8 hours are for an in-class skills check. Employees are trained in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Participants will acquire the skills needed to assist others in their workplace after an incident when professional responders are not immediately available to help.
